Microsoft Is Putting Monthly Limits on Xbox Cloud Gaming
Microsoft has announced a major change to Xbox Cloud Gaming, with Game Pass subscribers set to face monthly streaming limits beginning in November 2026.
Instead of offering effectively unlimited cloud gaming access, Microsoft will give subscribers a fixed number of streaming hours depending on their Game Pass tier:
- Game Pass Ultimate: 15 hours per month
- Game Pass Premium: 10 hours per month
- Game Pass Essential: 5 hours per month
Once those hours are used, players who want to continue streaming will have to purchase additional cloud playtime through the Xbox Store. Microsoft has not yet revealed how much those extra hours will cost.
It’s a pretty significant downgrade for anyone who regularly relies on Xbox Cloud Gaming. Fifteen hours a month on the most expensive Game Pass tier works out to only around 30 minutes per day.
Microsoft says the change is necessary because the cost of providing cloud gaming increases as more players use the service for longer periods. Interestingly, Xbox estimates that the new limits will currently affect only around 4% of Game Pass subscribers.
There is at least one interesting addition coming alongside the restrictions.
Starting in November, players won’t necessarily need Game Pass to use Xbox Cloud Gaming. Microsoft will allow people to purchase cloud gaming hours separately and use them to stream eligible games they already own on supported devices.
That could make cloud gaming more accessible to occasional players who don’t want another monthly subscription, but for existing Game Pass subscribers, the introduction of such low monthly limits is difficult to see as an improvement.
Xbox has spent years promoting cloud gaming as an important part of its strategy to let people play Xbox games anywhere without needing dedicated hardware. Putting a 15-hour ceiling on even its highest Game Pass tier — and then charging players for additional time — makes that vision considerably less attractive.
For players who primarily use Game Pass through the cloud, November could make Xbox gaming noticeably more expensive.
