Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis Will Let Players Customize Combat, Puzzle and Traversal Difficulty Separately

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is giving players much more control over how challenging they want Lara Croft’s next adventure to be.

Instead of using a traditional difficulty system where selecting Easy, Medium, or Hard changes the entire game, Legacy of Atlantis will allow players to adjust combat, puzzles, and traversal independently.

Each of the three gameplay categories will have three difficulty settings:

  • Easy
  • Medium
  • Hardcore

This means players will essentially be able to create their own difficulty preset.

For example, someone primarily interested in exploration and puzzle solving could set combat to Easy, traversal to Medium, and puzzles to Hardcore. On the other hand, players who enjoy challenging combat but don’t want to spend too much time figuring out puzzles could do the exact opposite.

A Great Option for Classic Tomb Raider Fans

The system could be particularly interesting for fans of the original 1996 Tomb Raider.

Classic Tomb Raider games were known for making players carefully explore environments, work out puzzles, judge jumps and discover the correct route forward with relatively little assistance.

Players looking for that experience in Legacy of Atlantis will be able to increase the puzzle difficulty without also being forced into significantly harder combat encounters.

Flying Wild Hog creative director Michał Kuk explained that giving players this freedom was one of the goals behind the system.

“With difficulty levels, we have prepared it in a way that I’m pretty sure everyone can set it for their own pleasure.”

Kuk added:

“You can adjust the game basically however you want.”

Difficulty Settings Are Becoming More Flexible

Separating difficulty between different gameplay systems makes sense for a Tomb Raider game because combat, exploration and puzzle solving require very different skills.

A player might be excellent at solving environmental puzzles but struggle with combat. Another might enjoy difficult firefights while preferring exploration to remain relatively straightforward.

Rather than forcing both players into the same preset, Legacy of Atlantis allows them to decide which parts of the experience should provide the biggest challenge.

It should also make the game considerably more accessible without necessarily removing difficulty for players who want it.

Most importantly, the Hardcore puzzle option could provide longtime Tomb Raider fans with a way to recreate some of the challenge associated with Lara Croft’s earliest adventures, while newer players can configure the experience around the aspects of Tomb Raider they enjoy most.

It’s a small feature on paper, but giving players independent control over combat, traversal and puzzle difficulty could end up being one of Legacy of Atlantis’ most useful additions.
