GPT-6 Astra Spent 141 Hours Playing Minecraft — Until a Creeper Ruined Its Plans
GPT-6 Astra was put through a 141-hour Minecraft experiment, and the AI managed to make some surprisingly impressive progress before encountering one of Minecraft’s oldest problems: a Creeper.
Independent AI evaluator Vals AI tested Astra’s ability to operate autonomously inside Minecraft over the lengthy run.
Astra managed to build a semi-automatic Blaze farm and collect six Blaze Rods. It later located a Warped Forest, killed more than six Endermen and collected three Ender Pearls.
That’s where things started going wrong.
Astra had placed its valuable resources inside a chest. A Creeper eventually appeared and exploded near it, destroying both the chest and Astra’s bed. The valuable items stored inside the chest were lost, while the destruction of the bed also removed that location as Astra’s respawn point.
Interestingly, the experiment was reportedly running with Minecraft’s keepInventory option enabled. That meant Astra could normally keep items it was carrying after dying — making its decision to store the important resources inside an unprotected chest particularly costly.
After the explosion, Astra struggled to regain its previous momentum. Vals described the model as appearing “defeated,” with Astra subsequently spending several hours doing essentially nothing but farming potatoes instead of immediately rebuilding its earlier progress.
Despite the setback, the run demonstrated how far an AI agent could progress while independently navigating a game environment over an extremely long session.
It also demonstrated something Minecraft players have known for years:
Never trust a chest when there’s a Creeper nearby.
