Terraria’s Popular Calamity Mod Discord Server Hacked in Cryptocurrency Scam
The official Discord server for Terraria’s popular Calamity Mod has reportedly been taken over by hackers, who used its community of more than 250,000 members to promote a cryptocurrency scam.
The incident, which reportedly occurred on October 9, saw attackers gain access to the server after allegedly posing as former moderators. The breach allowed them to exploit the community’s trust to promote a cryptocurrency named after the popular Terraria mod.

Hackers Exploit Moderator Trust
According to reports, two users tricked the server’s owner into granting them access by impersonating former moderators. One of the individuals was later identified as Kata, a hacker reportedly linked to multiple Discord server takeovers.
Once inside, the attackers began flooding the server with links promoting the Calamity-themed cryptocurrency. The apparent goal was to use the large community’s attention to drive up the token’s price before selling their holdings and leaving other investors with the losses.
The incident highlights how social engineering can compromise even large gaming communities, particularly when attackers exploit existing relationships and trust between server administrators and moderators.
Former Moderators Warn the Community
Following the takeover, former moderators reportedly warned members to avoid the cryptocurrency links and not engage with the suspicious promotions.
One individual also managed to wipe the server’s channels and messages, further disrupting the community as efforts to respond to the breach unfolded.
The damage has extended beyond the server itself. Tens of thousands of members have reportedly left following the incident, reflecting the loss of trust and uncertainty surrounding the community’s future.
A Warning for Gaming Communities
The Calamity Mod incident serves as another reminder that popular gaming communities on Discord can become targets for cryptocurrency scams. Attackers may exploit a trusted server’s reputation and large audience to make fraudulent promotions appear legitimate.
Users should treat unexpected cryptocurrency offers shared through gaming communities with caution, even when the messages appear to come from familiar moderators or official channels. Never connect a crypto wallet, share sensitive information, or invest in a token simply because it is being promoted in a community you trust.
For the Calamity Mod community, the immediate challenge is recovering from the takeover and rebuilding confidence among its members.
At the time of writing, the full extent of the damage and the server’s recovery status remain unclear. The reported cryptocurrency scheme and the identities involved have not been independently confirmed in this article.
