WhatsApp is stepping up its customization game. According to the latest Android beta (version 2.26.6.1), the messaging giant is introducing premium features that let users personalize the app like never before. From changing icons to altering the app’s accent colors, these upgrades are designed exclusively for those who opt for the paid subscription.
A Look Back: iOS Customization That Never Launched
Earlier, WhatsApp experimented with similar customization in its iOS beta (version 24.1.10.70), allowing users to modify the app’s main color scheme. The goal was to enhance user control and accessibility, particularly for those with visual preferences or impairments. However, the feature never went live, as WhatsApp felt it needed more development before rolling it out.
What’s New in Android Beta
The Android beta is bringing two standout premium features focused on visual personalization:
1. Custom App Icons
Users can now choose from 14 new themed icons, including Aurora, Fluffy, Galaxy, Clay, Sparkle, and Neon. There are also seven single-color options—brown, purple, orange, green, blue, pink, and monochrome—plus the classic WhatsApp icon refreshed for modern design.
2. Theme Color Customization
The second feature enables users to change the app’s branding color, similar to the iOS test. Users can pick from 19 options, including classic green, royal blue, violet, navy, coral, burgundy, seafoam, pink, red, orange, golden yellow, and more. Selecting a new color updates multiple elements throughout the interface, from tabs to floating action buttons.
Premium Subscription Details
These customization options are part of WhatsApp’s upcoming paid plan, first hinted at in beta version 2.26.4.8. While pricing hasn’t been revealed and may vary by region, the subscription is optional. Core WhatsApp functions—like sending messages—will remain free, ensuring basic communication is accessible to everyone.
Features May Evolve
WhatsApp emphasizes that the premium plan is still in development. Some features may be refined, removed, or expanded before the official launch. The company plans to roll out the updates gradually to beta testers to gather feedback before a wider release.
The new premium tier is set to give users who love personalization more control over the app’s look and feel while maintaining free access to essential messaging tools.
