So what is ReSTIR exactly? In simpler terms, it’s about optimizing how light samples are used in a scene. Instead of recalculating everything from scratch, ReSTIR checks out neighboring pixels and previous frames to decide which light samples are worth keeping. This clever approach helps reduce the load on powerful GPUs, especially in graphically demanding titles like Alan Wake 2.

Nvidia’s researchers are confident that their upgrades will pave the way for more widespread use of full path tracing in games. Here are some of the juicy improvements they’ve rolled out:

  • Halved the costs for spatial reuse using reciprocal neighbor selection.
  • Introduced new ray footprint thresholds that adapt to different scenes and materials.
  • Minimized correlation issues with sample duplication maps.
  • Unified ReSTIR for both direct and indirect lighting, enhancing quality and performance.
  • Various optimizations designed to reduce artifacts and improve overall robustness.

To test these enhancements, the team used an Nvidia RTX 5880, which sits comfortably between the RTX 4080 Super and the RTX 4090 in terms of power. The results? A staggering 2.74x performance increase! Even after accounting for quality improvements like noise reduction, the new system still operates 2.3 times faster than the original ReSTIR.
