FFXIV’s New “Evercold” Expansion Almost Had a Different Name – And So Did Stormblood & Shadowbringers!

Kya haal hain, fellow Warriors of Light and gaming enthusiasts across Pakistan? We’ve got some absolutely massive news for all you Final Fantasy XIV fans out there!

The latest expansion for our beloved MMORPG has officially been unveiled, and get ready to mark your calendars because it’s called “Evercold”! Announced during the North American Fan Festival, this new chapter in the ongoing Godless Realms Saga sounds absolutely epic. Players will once again step into the shoes of their Warrior of Light, embarking on a critical mission to stop the ominous Fourth Reflection from freezing over everything in its path. Sounds like a chilling adventure awaits!

But here’s a little secret straight from the game’s mastermind, Director Naoki Yoshida, himself. In a press conference held after the big reveal, Yoshida-san spilled the beans: “Evercold” wasn’t the first choice for the expansion’s name! Turns out, Square Enix actually rejected the initial name they had in mind.

And guess what? This isn’t a one-off thing! It’s happened before with some of FFXIV’s most iconic expansions. Yoshida-san shared some fascinating behind-the-scenes tidbits, explaining just how challenging it can be to nail down the perfect title that fits the theme, story, and legal requirements.

Remember the high-octane “Stormblood” expansion? Its original name candidate was actually “Rebellion.” Can you imagine? But due to various “legal reasons,” that name unfortunately didn’t make the cut. Then there’s the fan-favourite “Shadowbringers,” which was initially considered as “Darkbringers.” And for the emotional, world-ending saga of “Endwalker,” the team even toyed with “World’s End” as a title – talk about dramatic!

It just goes to show you the immense thought and effort that goes into every single detail of these massive expansions, right down to their names. While “Rebellion” or “Darkbringers” might have sounded cool in their own right, we’ve got to admit, the final names like Stormblood, Shadowbringers, Endwalker, and now Evercold, have a certain ring to them that just feels… perfectly Eorzean.

What do you guys think of these almost-names? Would “Rebellion” have been a better fit for Stormblood, or “World’s End” for Endwalker? Share your thoughts with us!
