A Fan’s Tribute: Reviving Silent Hill 2’s CGI Art in the Face of Lost Source Code

We’ve all been buzzing about Bloober Team’s impressive remake of Silent Hill 2 set to drop in 2024, but let’s be real—wouldn’t it be awesome to see a remastered version of the classic as well? The remake changes quite a bit, from gameplay mechanics to storytelling, leaving many fans wishing for the original’s haunting atmosphere. Unfortunately, it seems like that dream may not come true anytime soon since Konami has misplaced the source code for the final version of the game.

Now, while remastering a game without its source code isn’t exactly a walk in the park, it’s not impossible. Just look at Konami’s own struggle with the Silent Hill HD collection in 2012, which turned out to be a disaster, notably for removing the iconic fog from Silent Hill 2 and introducing various other issues.

In light of this situation, one passionate fan has stepped up to give Silent Hill 2 a visual facelift—at least in part. Over on the r/silenthill subreddit, user Rashmunchel has been hard at work upscaling the game’s CGI artwork. “I wanted to save what remains of SH2’s CGI art because the high-quality models and cutscenes have been lost,” they shared, praising the talented Takayoshi Sato for his groundbreaking work at the time.

The restoration includes everything from model renders to cutscene images and animation frames, with some gems like an alternate outfit for Maria making an appearance. A standout creation is a detailed closeup of the main character, James Sunderland. “It took ages to restore this one because I had to work from a really low-quality image,” Rashmunchel explained.

The results? Simply stunning! But as with any project involving AI, there’s some skepticism. One user asked, “Are you using AI?” Rashmunchel confirmed that they are indeed leveraging a generative AI upscaling tool to enhance the images, which were initially quite small and low quality. However, they also noted that they refine these AI-generated upscales in Photoshop to get as close to the original look as possible, admitting, “AI by itself doesn’t do a good job. There are always those annoying imperfections, and I absolutely dislike that ‘AI’ look.” They even mentioned considering non-AI upscalers based on user feedback.

While opting for a non-AI solution may seem like the smarter move, Rashmunchel’s efforts are a commendable way to keep a part of this classic alive. With the chances of a proper Silent Hill 2 remaster looking slim, it’s refreshing to see a dedicated fan taking the initiative to preserve the game’s legacy. Who knows? Maybe this could reignite interest in reviving even more from this terrifying franchise.
