Gothic Remake: Murder Matters, Just Like the Classic!

In the world of RPGs, Gothic holds a special place for its unique approach to gameplay, and the upcoming remake is set to continue that tradition. One of the standout elements of the original was its non-lethal combat system. Early in the game, you meet a fellow inmate who ropes you into a scheme that quickly backfires, leaving you vulnerable and at the mercy of your foes. It’s a tough lesson, but that’s just a taste of Gothic’s gritty charm.

In this remake, the game directors have confirmed that the same rules apply. Reinhard Pollice, the game director, shared that violence against other characters will have serious repercussions. If you resort to murder, it won’t go unnoticed. NPCs will remember your actions, and your reputation will take a hit. “If someone witnesses your misdeeds, it spreads like wildfire in that faction,” he said. “Soon, nobody will want to chat with you because you’ve built a reputation as a violent guy.”

Of course, there’s a chance to redeem yourself, just like in the original game. If you knock an NPC down, you can loot them, but it won’t be as simple as just running off with their stuff. Anything you steal will be marked as stolen, complicating future interactions. If you want to mend fences, you might need to return what you’ve taken!

Interestingly, the animal behavior in the game adds another layer to the experience. Unlike other RPGs where animals alert guards to your transgressions, Gothic Remake gives you the ability to manipulate creatures like wolves or molerats by using bait. “I can place food as bait and lure them into fights,” explained Pollice, adding that there’s a relationship dynamic at play, which will affect how these creatures interact with one another.

While you might not be able to assemble a team of critters to take on bigger threats, the game’s design encourages creative problem-solving. “Gothic is all about immersion,” Pollice emphasized, noting that the game lacks a minimap to enhance the exploration experience. This attention to detail is sure to resonate with long-time fans when Gothic Remake launches on June 5, available on Steam and GOG.
