Goblins in the Machine: The Curious Case of ChatGPT’s Creepy Creatures

Hey gamers! You might think using advanced AI like ChatGPT is all about having smart conversations, but it turns out things can get a little weird. Recently, OpenAI dropped a blog post unveiling a peculiar situation: their AI models have been overrun by goblins! Yes, you read that right—goblins!

According to OpenAI, the goblin craze started with their GPT-5.1 update, where the AI began mentioning all sorts of little creatures like goblins and gremlins in its responses. While these mentions were initially amusing, they soon turned into a full-blown infestation that left the developers scratching their heads.

OpenAI first noticed this strange phenomenon back in November, but it seems like the goblin chatter had been brewing for a while. Interestingly, the term “gremlin” also saw a rise, but thankfully, the more chill mogwai didn’t join the madness.

Things escalated with the introduction of GPT-5.4, where the goblin mentions skyrocketed by a jaw-dropping 3,881% in the ‘Nerd’ personality! That number alone triggered an internal investigation into why the AI was so obsessed with these little critters.

Different personalities in ChatGPT showed varying levels of goblin enthusiasm. The Nerd personality was the worst offender, followed by Quirky, which had a 737% increase in mentions, and Friendly, which saw a 265% rise. The Default personality was a bit more reserved, with only a 64% bump. The Efficient and Professional models, surprisingly, had fewer goblins to deal with.

OpenAI speculated that the Nerd personality’s system prompt played a big role in this goblin obsession. It essentially aimed to promote creativity and playful language while discussing complex topics. But here’s the kicker: the AI’s training seemed to have amplified its fascination with creatures, giving higher scores to outputs featuring “goblin” or “gremlin.”

Once the Nerd personality was retired in March, the goblin mentions started to drop significantly. But because the next model, GPT-5.5, began its training before this goblin issue was addressed, it too fell prey to the same problem.

To tackle this creature conundrum, OpenAI introduced a new guideline: “Never talk about goblins, gremlins, raccoons, trolls, ogres, pigeons, or any creatures unless it’s completely relevant.” It’s like telling the AI not to mention what it wants to talk about! It feels like a quick fix rather than a solution to the underlying cause.

At the end of the day, this goblin issue is just one of many quirky problems in the world of AI. It’s a reminder that even the most advanced tech can have its oddball moments. So, the next time you fire up ChatGPT, just remember: it might have a few goblins hiding in its code!
