Resident Evil Reboot: Director Dishes on the Creepy New Take and Creature Features
Excitement is building in the gaming community with the reveal of the first trailer for Sony’s upcoming Resident Evil reboot. The director, Zach Cregger—known for his work on Barbarian and Weapons—sat down to share some juicy insights about this new adaptation and what fans can expect.
Cregger describes this film as his most visually dynamic project yet, stating, “I wanted to create a movie that captures my own experiences playing the games.” He sees the events of this film happening alongside Resident Evil 2, suggesting that while it doesn’t directly connect to the original characters, it resides in the same universe. “This is just another guy on a different mission in Raccoon City,” he explains.
The main character, Brian, portrayed by Austin Abrams, is set to navigate the perilous streets of Raccoon City as he journeys from the outskirts to the heart of the chaos. Cregger hints that viewers will see Brian face a series of intense challenges along the way, promising a thrilling ride filled with unique horrors, much like the games.
“Every set piece introduces a new kind of fear,” Cregger remarks. He emphasizes the importance of maintaining a rhythm that shifts and changes, constantly raising the stakes. For fans of the games, the film will evoke familiar themes of resource management, including the classic struggle for ammunition—Brian starts with a pistol but will eventually upgrade to a shotgun and an MP5 machine gun.
“One of the best parts of the games is that feeling of relief when you find a new weapon,” Cregger shares, adding that Brian’s journey includes moments of desperation as he hunts for ammo after discovering a powerful shotgun.
Interestingly, Cregger noted that this reboot won’t focus heavily on zombies. Instead, he’s leaning into the “weird creature stuff.” He describes a scene where Brian encounters a bizarre and unsettling figure, drawing inspiration from literature to create something truly unique. “I don’t have a Nemesis in this film, but I do have some nods to that classic horror element,” he says.
The trailer teases some eerie moments, including unsettling visuals of limbs creeping from dark corners. Cregger mentions a new creature feature that evolves throughout the movie, stating, “Believe it or not, this film doesn’t rely on zombies as much as you might expect. We’re showcasing the strange and horrifying aspects of the T-Virus rather than traditional zombie mayhem.”
“I wouldn’t classify this as a zombie movie specifically,” he adds. “There’s so much potential with the T-Virus to explore different manifestations of horror, and I wanted to take full advantage of that.”
Visually, Cregger aims to replicate the immersive experience of the game, utilizing techniques that engage the audience like a third-person perspective. He’s keen to create a sense of intimacy, allowing viewers to feel right behind the character as they navigate tense environments. “Brian is an ordinary guy, not a trained soldier,” Cregger explains. “I like to build suspense by slowly revealing the horrors that lurk around every corner.”
Mark your calendars for September 18, 2026, as this chilling reimagining of Resident Evil is set to hit the big screen and promises to deliver a fresh take on the beloved horror franchise!
