Big Shake-Up at 2K: Project Ethos Studio Downsizes, Game Gets a ‘Renewed Vision’!

Gamer bhaiyo aur behno, we’ve got some big news brewing from the world of game development that affects an upcoming title from 2K Games. The studio behind Project Ethos, 31st Union, has unfortunately confirmed that they’ve had to let go of some of their team members.

This difficult decision comes as the team aims to become “more nimble” and efficient in their development process. Ben Brinkman, the studio head at 31st Union, explained in an internal memo that these changes are crucial “to realize our goals and deliver this experience for players.” Essentially, they’re scaling back to better align with the current stage of development for Project Ethos.

But that’s not all! It seems Project Ethos itself is getting a bit of a makeover. Originally announced in 2024 as a “roguelike hero shooter,” the game was described as a third-person shooter with hero characters, unique abilities, and a PvPvE extraction mode. However, Brinkman’s recent message hints at a “renewed direction and vision,” now focusing on a “skill-based PVP roguelike experience.” This suggests a possible re-evaluation of its core gameplay loop and how it fits into the competitive gaming landscape.

It’s worth noting that Project Ethos has had a bit of a bumpy ride before. Reports from a while back hinted at a change in leadership just months after the game was first revealed, suggesting its initial announcement didn’t quite generate the buzz 2K was hoping for. Developing a live-service game, especially in the super competitive hero shooter space, is incredibly challenging, and many studios often face hurdles trying to carve out their niche.

Despite these significant changes, Brinkman remains super optimistic. He stated he’s “never been more confident in the future of our game, this team, and the commitment and investment Take-Two and 2K leadership continue to show.” It sounds like 31st Union is determined to push through these challenges and deliver a unique experience for gamers. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for Project Ethos!
