Say Goodbye to Backseat Gaming! This Tool Puts Dark Souls 2 Chatters in Control!

If you’ve ever streamed a super tough game like Dark Souls, you know the drill: your chat is always buzzing with “Do this!” or “Go there!” – basically, a digital army of backseat gamers. It’s a common frustration, especially when you’re navigating the unforgiving lands of Drangleic for the very first time. But what if those chatters could actually put their money where their mouth is?

Enter a brilliant new solution! A popular Vtuber known as girl_dm_ recently showed off an innovative, in-browser tool that lets her community members remotely play a segment of her Dark Souls 2 save. Yes, you read that right – they get to take the controller and show her exactly how it’s done, live on stream!

Named ‘backseatNOW 9000’, this clever system was cooked up by one of girl_dm_’s own community members. Here’s the cool part: it grabs a copy of her latest save file and gives a chosen chatter a solid eight minutes to play. The action is then broadcast live, picture-in-picture, for everyone to see. The best bit? Viewers don’t need to download anything extra – just a browser and a compatible controller.

Girl_dm_ describes it perfectly as “Temu Google Stadia.” For those who might not remember, Google Stadia was a cloud gaming service that promised you could play big games over the internet without needing an expensive gaming PC or console. While Stadia ultimately didn’t quite hit the mark and shut down in 2023, the ‘backseatNOW 9000’ tool uses a similar concept: it streams gameplay from the streamer’s PC to the viewer’s browser, letting them control the game remotely for their session.

Of course, no new tech is without its quirks. Currently, players will need a controller as mouse and keyboard aren’t supported. Also, PS5 DualSense controllers aren’t quite playing nice with the tool yet. For streamers, setting it up requires a bit of tech wizardry, involving tools like Streamer.Bot and a Blackmagic encoder for those interactive streams.

To keep things fair and secure, the streamer has full control. Would-be backseaters get unique login credentials that are only valid for their eight-minute session. And if anyone tries to mess around or hijack the stream, they’re looking at a week-long chat timeout! No funny business allowed.

While the initial idea might sound like a challenge to prove who’s the better player, in practice, it’s actually creating a super positive vibe. Souls games are notorious for their hidden paths and secrets, and this tool lets experienced Dark Souls 2 veterans guide girl_dm_ through Drangleic’s deepest corners. It’s a fantastic example of a gaming community coming together to enhance the experience for everyone, turning potential frustration into pure fun and exploration!
