The Odyssey’s Length Revealed: Are We Ready for a Nearly 3-Hour Epic?

Christopher Nolan’s much-anticipated film, The Odyssey, is set to be quite the cinematic experience, clocking in at an impressive 2 hours and 53 minutes. While it’s not quite a full three hours, it’s close enough to keep audiences on the edge of their seats! The runtime was initially shared by IMAX and AMC Theatres but has since been taken down. No worries—it’s been confirmed by fans who have spotted it!

The film’s pre-sales kicked off last July, allowing eager fans to grab tickets for its opening weekend in 70mm IMAX format, even before the first teaser dropped. More tickets will soon be available for regular and IMAX screenings, so keep your eyes peeled!

Now, when we talk about long runtimes, it’s worth noting that The Odyssey will be Nolan’s second-longest film, just shy of Oppenheimer, which hits the three-hour mark. For context, both Interstellar and The Dark Knight Rises trail behind at 2 hours and 49 minutes and 2 hours and 45 minutes, respectively. Nolan typically aims for runtimes under three hours, especially since shooting on IMAX film has its limitations. The physical holders for the film reels can struggle with anything beyond that, prompting Nolan to work closely with IMAX to stretch the limits for Oppenheimer. It remains to be seen if he had to make any cuts for The Odyssey, given its vast narrative.

The film is generating significant buzz, but it hasn’t been without controversy. Lupita Nyong’o’s casting as Helen of Troy and her sister Clytemnestra has sparked quite a bit of debate. The Oscar-winning actress shared that she’s honored to take on the role, but acknowledges that criticism is part of the package. “I’m not spending my time thinking of a defense,” she commented. “The criticism will exist whether I engage with it or not.”

Additionally, Nolan has faced scrutiny over some “historical inaccuracies.” Many viewers are not thrilled about the use of modern dialogue and accents, with specific moments, like the term “daddy” used by Robert Pattinson’s character to tease Tom Holland’s Telemachus, drawing ire. This has led to discussions about how language evolves over time and the importance of maintaining period accuracy in films.

Some fans have also critiqued the armor depicted in the film, saying it appears more theatrical than historically accurate. Nolan defended his choices in an interview, explaining that he aimed for a “feasible” representation while making sure it resonated with the story. “Hopefully, they’ll enjoy the film, even if they don’t agree with everything,” he remarked. “We had scientists complain about Interstellar, but we want our audience to know we take this seriously.”

With an all-star cast featuring the likes of Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, and Charlize Theron, The Odyssey is poised to be one of the summer’s biggest blockbusters. It’s set to hit theaters on July 17, 2026, and is already generating excitement ahead of other major releases like Spielberg’s Disclosure Day and Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
