Bungie Staff Left in the Dark About Destiny 2 Support Shutdown
It seems like a bombshell dropped in the gaming world last week when news broke that Bungie plans to stop supporting Destiny 2. Interestingly, it turns out that most of the Bungie team had no clue about this decision until it was announced to the public. Shocking, right?
According to reports, many developers at Bungie were blindsided by the news, which also followed the studio’s recent launch of their new project, Marathon. It’s wild to think that just a few months ago, they were working on new content for Destiny 2, and now they’re gearing up for a major shift.
As it stands, only a select group of teams were in the loop about the discontinuation of support for Destiny 2, including those working on the final content update set to drop on June 9. The decision to move away from Destiny 2 apparently took place earlier this year, leaving the rest of the team focusing on updates that have now been scrapped, like the cancelled The Shattered Cycle.
While it’s not clear just how many team members were surprised by the announcement, reports suggest that those who were aware urged the higher-ups to inform more staff about what was happening. Compounding the shock was a separate report hinting at significant layoffs within Bungie, which only adds to the tension in the studio.
During a town hall meeting held after the announcement, staff reportedly sought clarity about the layoffs but didn’t receive adequate answers. It’s a tough time for everyone involved, especially when you consider that Bungie is shifting its focus primarily to Marathon, which is set to introduce a PvE mode in future updates. Early estimates have shown that Marathon sold around 1.2 million copies by March 24, which is promising for the new title.
Adding to the drama, Sony had previously reported a hefty $765 million loss tied to Bungie’s underperformance during the last financial year, following their $3.6 billion acquisition of the studio in 2022. As Bungie winds down its work on Destiny 2, fans are already mobilizing. A petition urging Sony to greenlight Destiny 3 has gained over 200,000 signatures in just a few days, showing how passionate the community is about the franchise.
With all these changes unfolding, it’s definitely a turbulent time for Bungie and its dedicated fanbase. How will this all play out? Only time will tell!
