Unveiling the Leviathans of Subnautica 2: Where to Spot These Ocean Giants

Subnautica 2 offers an expansive underwater world filled with various creatures, but none are as imposing as the Leviathans. These massive predators are the apex hunters you’ll encounter while navigating the deep blue, and they can send you back to your biolab in a heartbeat!

Whether you’re the type to steer clear of these ocean giants or you want to witness them up close, knowing where to find them on Proteus is essential. It helps you plan your route for a thrilling encounter or steer clear of danger. Here’s a lowdown on the different Leviathans lurking in the depths of Subnautica 2.

Meet the Leviathans and Their Hideouts

As of now, Subnautica 2 is in early access and features four distinct Leviathans: the Collector, the Shiver, the Great Jaw, and the Deepwing Brooder. Out of these, three are aggressive while one is harmless. Let’s break down where you can find each of these colossal creatures.

The Collector Leviathan

The Collector is probably the most notorious Leviathan in the game. This enormous squid is commonly encountered near story objectives, making it a frequent sight in your underwater adventures.

You can typically catch the Collector hanging around the gorges located to the east of your starting lifepod, especially around the Alien Ruins area. As you explore, you’ll likely run into this beast when you’re about 800 to 1,000 meters east from the lifepod.

Be warned: when the Collector is nearby, you’ll start to hear some ominous music. If you’re not in a Tadpole vehicle, it’s best to turn back since a direct encounter will lead to a swift demise. However, if you’re in a Tadpole, you can usually outrun it after sustaining some damage. For those looking to scan the Collector or make a quick escape, having the Camouflage Biomod and some speed upgrades can be a lifesaver!

The Shiver Leviathan

Next up is the Shiver, which has become something of a sensation among players. Sporting a prehistoric appearance with wings and a gigantic beak, this Leviathan is as terrifying as it sounds.

Good news for those who want to avoid it: currently, the Shiver only appears in the out-of-bounds zones west of the starting lifepod. Just head toward the giant tree sticking out of the water, and you’ll eventually hit the limit where you’ll see a warning about the area not being fully developed. If you ignore this and venture further, be prepared for a surprise encounter with several Shivers that can wipe you out in an instant!

The Great Jaw Leviathan

Then there’s the Great Jaw, a unique Leviathan that doesn’t move and can be avoided easily—if you’re careful. This gigantic clam might look like a harmless object, but it’s alive and dangerous. Getting caught in its grip spells immediate doom.

To find the Great Jaw, swim about 325 meters south of your starting lifepod and dive down around 60 meters. You’ll spot its shell almost immediately. Feel free to explore inside for some treasure, but watch out for the pink tendrils! If you accidentally disturb them, the clam will snap shut, and if you’re caught inside, it’s game over!

The Deepwing Brooder Leviathan

Last but not least is the Deepwing Brooder, which you might not even know exists. This Leviathan can appear anywhere in open waters and is completely harmless to players. While not classified as a Leviathan-class creature, its sheer size certainly qualifies it.

Sadly, the Deepwing Brooder is incredibly rare in the current version of Subnautica 2. Think of it as the Reefback from the first game, but even more elusive!

With this knowledge in hand, whether you plan to confront these majestic beasts or avoid them at all costs, your adventure in Subnautica 2 is sure to be thrilling. Dive deep and enjoy the wonders of the ocean!
