The Rising Costs of Gaming Devices: Are We Facing a $1,000 Steam Machine?

In recent months, the gaming world has seen a significant spike in hardware prices, and the buzz surrounding Valve’s Steam Machine is no exception. Initially, many hoped to snag this mini gaming beast for less than a grand, but with the Steam Deck’s price hike, it seems that dream may be slipping away.

When I first got a sneak peek at the Steam Machine last year during a visit to Valve, the expectation was that its price would compete with similar gaming PCs. Initially, my gut told me we were looking at a $1,200 (approx. Rs 336,000) price tag. However, after crunching some numbers, I thought it might settle closer to $800 (approx. Rs 224,000). Little did I know the ongoing RAM shortage would throw a wrench in those calculations.

Speaking of RAM, the market has been a rollercoaster ride. Recently, I’ve been keeping an eye on a basic G.Skill Flare X5 RAM kit, which is currently priced at around $404 (approx. Rs 113,120) – still steep, but a slight dip of about 10% from previous months. Unfortunately, given the volatile nature of the market, this lower price won’t last long. Back in January, industry analyst Anshel Sag warned that this RAM crisis could stretch on for a while, and he wasn’t wrong.

For a time, DIY PC builders bore the brunt of the rising costs, while prebuilt gaming systems and laptops had decent inventory. However, those days seem to be fading. Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo have all raised prices for their consoles, and now it appears the Steam Deck has jumped on that bandwagon.

If you’re currently hunting for a handheld gaming PC, it might be wise to look at more affordable options. The lower-tier Xbox Ally, for example, is still priced at $599 (approx. Rs 167,720) at retailers, and you can even install SteamOS for that Steam Deck-like experience. But brace yourself; it’s only a matter of time before that price climbs as well.

It’s a tough pill to swallow, but we might be entering an era where most gaming devices start at around $1,000 (approx. Rs 280,000). It wouldn’t shock me if the PS5 and Xbox Series X also see their prices go north of that threshold.

Valve has hinted in past updates about the delayed Steam Deck that climbing hardware costs are the main hurdle delaying the Steam Machine. It seems they’re waiting, hoping prices will drop to make the launch more feasible. But as things stand, we could very well be looking at a $1,200 (approx. Rs 336,000) Steam Machine becoming the new norm, especially if other consoles hike their prices too.

Right now, it’s still unclear when we’ll finally see the Steam Machine hit the shelves. With every day that passes, it seems less likely that it will come in under that $1,000 (approx. Rs 280,000) mark. Here’s hoping I’m wrong, but when Valve finally hits that order button, don’t be shocked if it comes with a hefty four-digit price tag!

Note: PKR figures are approximate, based on a rate of Rs 280.00 per USD. Exchange rates fluctuate — please check the latest dollar rate for exact pricing.
