Tom Holland Promises an Authentic Punisher in Spider-Man: Brand New Day

Tom Holland, the guy behind Peter Parker, has addressed some concerns about how Spider-Man: Brand New Day might handle the iconic Punisher character. Many fans worry that the film could soften Punisher’s brutal edge, but Holland insists that they are staying true to “the Frank Castle we know.”

In a chat with a popular magazine, Holland tackled these worries head-on. He mentioned that he, along with Punisher actor Jon Bernthal and director Destin Daniel Cretton, are committed to bringing one of Marvel’s most ruthless characters back to life on the big screen. “I understand the fears of adapting an R-rated character into a more family-friendly storyline,” he said. “But trust me, the world we’ve created around him feels authentic to the Frank Castle we’ve come to love.”

The Frank Castle Holland is referring to is the same one Bernthal introduced in Daredevil Season 2 back in 2016. Fans have come to appreciate his portrayal of the character, known for mercilessly punishing bad guys in his own series, along with appearances in Daredevil: Born Again and a recent Disney+ special, The Punisher: One Last Kill. This version of the Punisher doesn’t hold back, leaving a trail of destruction while navigating a Marvel Cinematic Universe that usually aims for a wider audience.

Director Cretton is mindful of the balance between the Punisher’s brutality and the overall tone of the film. Holland even teased that they’ve found clever ways to navigate around Punisher’s infamous swearing and violent tendencies. “There are fun ways to get around the fact that he swears all the time and kills people,” Holland quipped.

As for what role Frank Castle plays in this new story, details are still under wraps. We’ve seen a glimpse of him in the trailer, where he’s behind the wheel of an armored truck, ready to blast Peter Parker off his ride. Another entertaining shot shows him with his mouth webbed up and dropping an F-bomb.

Bernthal also shared his thoughts on the Punisher’s upcoming appearance. He described his Frank Castle as “perfectly at peace in a world of darkness,” suggesting fans shouldn’t expect him to play friendly neighbor to Spider-Man, despite caring about Peter. “He’s not looking for a buddy or someone to pull him out of the hole he’s in. He’s fine living there, and honestly, he just wants to dig deeper,” Bernthal explained.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is set to navigate around the Punisher’s violent methods when it lands in theaters on July 31, 2026. Keep an eye out for a recent poster that offers a closer look at Spidey’s new suit!
