Yacht Club Games Teases New 3D Shovel Knight Project Amidst Mina the Hollower Buzz

In a recent chat with Bloomberg, Sean Velasco, co-founder of Yacht Club Games, spilled the beans on their upcoming title, Mina the Hollower. Priced at $20 (approx. Rs 5,600), this game is crucial for the indie studio’s future, and Velasco shared some interesting insights about it.

The spotlight is currently on Mina, with the team focused on its support and marketing as it pays homage to classic top-down Zelda gameplay. However, there’s a hint of nostalgia for Shovel Knight fans, as Velasco mentioned that a 3D Shovel Knight project was briefly on the drawing board. The team had to pause its development to concentrate on Mina the Hollower, which faced several hurdles during its creation.

Interestingly, Velasco noted that while the new Shovel Knight was already halfway through its development phase and “not far from being showable,” the Mina project encountered significant issues, particularly due to the absence of some of Yacht Club’s seasoned developers at the start. Parts of the game needed to be completely reconstructed, signaling that it wasn’t all smooth sailing for Mina.

Yacht Club Games experimented with splitting their team into various groups, a strategy that’s worked wonders for other studios like Obsidian. However, Velasco expressed that sticking together as a cohesive unit is a priority for them moving forward. “We’re going to want to stick together, no matter what we do,” he emphasized, hinting at a more unified approach to game development.

While this means they’ll be rolling out games one at a time, Velasco remains optimistic about their future. He remarked, “At the end of Mina we were cooking, and it was great. If we could just be doing that in perpetuity, that’s all we would need. Then the games wouldn’t take so long.”

For fans, the excitement is palpable. Mina the Hollower has already garnered attention on platforms like Kickstarter, and many players are enjoying it on their Steam Decks. It seems Yacht Club Games is steered towards an exciting future, blending their classic charm with new adventures.
