Sung Kang Revvs Up for Directorial Debut with “Drifter”
Sung Kang, the actor known for his iconic role in the Fast & Furious series, has taken a bold step into the director’s chair with his new film titled “Drifter.” During a recent event, he unveiled the film’s trailer, which promises to be both thrilling and deeply personal.
In “Drifter,” Kang takes on the role of Tree, a janitor at a racetrack with a hidden talent for drifting that he has yet to fully embrace. The story revolves around his chance to finally participate in a professional drifting competition, all while grappling with the shadows of his past. Kang describes Tree as a character who feels lost and voiceless, but through the course of the film, he discovers a sense of belonging and community.
At the event, Kang expressed his mission to craft a love letter to the car community, emphasizing that past films often overlooked the true essence of car culture. He shared his desire to represent the community authentically, stating, “I want to make stories that resonate with the people who live and breathe this culture.”
Although Kang’s character Han from Fast & Furious has a storied history, he made it clear that “Drifter” will stand on its own and not connect with the Fast franchise. “I wanted to keep it separate,” he said, highlighting his commitment to storytelling that reflects his own experiences and the community around him.
Reflecting on the “Justice for Han” movement, Kang noted that he thought his time with the Fast franchise had ended. However, he acknowledged that the fans’ passionate demand brought him back into the fold, reiterating the unique bond that franchises share with their audience.
Fans can look forward to “Drifter” hitting theaters later this year, promising a mix of heartfelt storytelling and high-octane action. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting new project!
