Xbox’s Future: More Action on YouTube Than at Microsoft, Says CEO Nadella

In a recent chat, Microsoft’s CEO Satya Nadella spilled the beans about the current state of Xbox, acknowledging that the platform is navigating through some choppy waters. He pointed out that there’s more cash flowing in from Xbox games on YouTube than what’s being generated directly by Microsoft.

This conversation comes right after Xbox head Asha Sharma shared her ambitious plans to revamp the gaming branch, aiming for a fresh start. Nadella explained that the big task ahead for the Xbox team is to innovate in both hardware and gaming, all while making it financially viable.

“Microsoft has been pouring resources into gaming for the last 25 years,” Nadella remarked. “Now, it’s all about transforming that investment into a sustainable business model that continues to deliver top-notch entertainment.” But let’s be real, Xbox has been facing its fair share of challenges lately.

Despite a positive boost from the Xbox Games Showcase 2026, confusion around its exclusivity strategy has left fans scratching their heads. On top of that, the company recently reported a significant drop in Game Pass subscribers following a price hike in October, raising concerns about the brand’s future.

Sharma’s memo from June 10 indicated that while her initial 100 days as CEO have been promising, a tough road lies ahead due to ongoing issues with hardware components. In light of this, Nadella’s comments about monetization are quite revealing. He noted, “We haven’t really been tapping into the money-making potential of our entertainment. If anything, we’ve been propping it up.”

He added humorously, “There’s more monetization of Xbox games happening on YouTube than at Microsoft,” acknowledging the need for the company to focus on what they do best—creating amazing games and hardware, but in a way that makes sense financially.

As Xbox gears up for the future, they’re hopeful about finding a more sustainable path forward amidst the turbulence. Keep an eye out for news on potential layoffs and other shifts coming to the Xbox team as they strive to redefine their role within Microsoft.
