Rick and Morty Season 9, Episode 4: A Hilarious Twist with Owen Wilson’s Character
Heads up, Morty fans! This review is packed with spoilers for the latest episode of Rick and Morty, so buckle up!
Celebrity cameos are a staple of Rick and Morty, but sometimes they can get lost in the shuffle. However, Season 9 switches things up with the introduction of Reese, voiced by none other than Owen Wilson, who brings his unique charm to the episode titled “A Ricker Runs Through It.”
This episode really shines thanks to the stellar voice performances. Right off the bat, we see Rick, played by Ian Cardoni, and Morty, voiced by Harry Belden, diving into their latest spat. Cardoni nails Rick’s drunken antics, balancing hilarious whininess with an almost childlike petulance. Meanwhile, Morty’s reaction is just as entertaining, throwing a tantrum that rivals Rick’s.
Enter Owen Wilson’s Reese, who completely changes the vibe of the episode. His character feels tailor-made for Wilson’s laid-back, folksy style, and his entrance brings a refreshing change to the usual chaos. Suddenly, Rick transforms from a mean-spirited drunk into a lovable rogue, while Morty starts to lighten up as well. You can’t help but root for Reese, which is always a sign that something’s about to go sideways.
As the episode unfolds, we discover that Reese is actually Rick’s clever workaround to bypass his computer’s password. This reveal is amusing, but it opens the door to even more bizarre twists. The writers, Jax Ball and Albro Lundy, keep the momentum going, something that can sometimes falter in this series. They escalate the story in a delightful way.
Things take a wild turn when it’s revealed that Rick has created a source of infinite vodka by subjugating a world of friendly hog workers. What starts as a funny premise spirals into chaos when Morty rescues Reese, inadvertently igniting a rebellion among the hogs, leading to absolute mayhem back at the Smith household. The absurdity of it all is a testament to the show’s unpredictable storytelling.
Now, let’s not forget Jerry, voiced by Chris Parnell, who steals the limelight in this episode. He becomes a host for a gas cloud service technician who’s overly excited about his new “meat suit.” Watching possessed Jerry embrace his newfound freedom is a riot, and Parnell’s quirky voice work adds an extra layer of fun. However, it’s a bit disappointing that Spencer Grammer’s Summer and Sarah Chalke’s Beth seem to be sidelined this season.
Overall, “A Ricker Runs Through It” is a fantastic addition to the Rick and Morty universe, blending hilarious voice acting and wild plots in a way that keeps us all coming back for more!
