Gen Z’s Demand for Quality Films: Insights from Obsession Director Curry Barker

In a recent chat, Curry Barker, the director behind the hit film Obsession, shared some interesting thoughts about the movie-watching habits of Gen Z. Fresh off a successful weekend at the box office, Barker noted that this generation is willing to hit the theaters if there’s quality content on display.

With audiences flocking to see films like Backrooms and Obsession, Barker has been soaking up the love and attention that low-budget horror films are starting to receive. During an interview on the podcast Happy, Sad, Confused, he highlighted the significant impact Gen Z is having on this cinematic trend.

Barker remarked, “The takeaway here is clear: Gen Z shows up for original films.” He believes that the focus should be on the quality of storytelling rather than relying on established intellectual properties or whether a film is original in concept. “We’re all craving good stories, and honestly, I think many of us are a bit fed up with movies that seem rushed or too polished,” he explained.

At just 26, Barker embodies the Gen Z demographic. His film Obsession has gained recognition as a standout original horror flick since its release in May, and he’s eager to continue exploring original narratives while also dipping into franchise filmmaking. His upcoming project, Anything But Ghosts, features Barker himself alongside talents like Cooper Tomlinson and Bryce Dallas Howard. Plus, he’s got a Texas Chainsaw Massacre film in the works with A24.

From Barker’s perspective, young moviegoers want engaging stories with relatable characters and solid filmmaking. When asked what he wishes film studios would understand about Gen Z, he didn’t hold back: “We’re tired of slop. We want good films back. There’s still a strong desire for original movies that don’t rely on massive franchises, as long as the story holds up.”

While some fans can’t wait to catch Anything But Ghosts or the next installment of Texas Chainsaw Massacre, others are eager for a potential sequel to Obsession. Barker teased that he has a “cool idea” for a follow-up but is in no hurry to rush it into production. In the meantime, audiences are left anticipating what this fresh voice in horror will deliver next.
