PUBG Creator’s “Prologue: Go Wayback!” Goes Free-to-Play, Offers Unrestricted Refunds!

Salaam, gamers!

We’ve got some interesting, albeit a bit bittersweet, news from the world of gaming today. Remember Prologue: Go Wayback!, the open-world survival title from PlayerUnknown Productions – the studio founded by none other than PUBG creator Brendan Greene? Well, it’s just officially left Early Access on Steam, but not in the way anyone hoped.

Instead of a grand launch, the game is stepping out of Early Access in an unfinished state, with development completely halted. The studio recently shared some tough news about “hard decisions” regarding its future, which included unfortunately laying off staff and putting a stop to further work on Prologue.

PlayerUnknown Productions explained that they felt it was only right to remove the game from Early Access since they couldn’t continue developing it. While this wasn’t their original plan for a full release, they believe it’s the most honest way to keep the game available on Steam without misleading future players about its development status.

Now for the silver lining, especially for those who never got around to trying it: Prologue: Go Wayback! is now completely free on Steam! That’s right, you can add it to your library and own it forever without spending a single rupee. It’s a chance to experience a unique survival world, even if its journey has ended prematurely.

But wait, there’s more good news for players who actually paid for the game during its Early Access phase. The studio is offering an incredibly generous refund policy. If you shelled out around $20 (approx. Rs 5,600) for Prologue, you can get your money back, no questions asked! This isn’t your typical Steam refund with playtime restrictions or purchase date limits. PlayerUnknown Productions is allowing self-refunds for a full 60 days, until August 17, 2026, regardless of how much you played or when you bought it.

Here’s the cool part: if you want a refund but still want to keep the game in your library to play, you absolutely can! Just request the refund through Steam, and once it’s processed and removed from your account, you can simply re-add it for free since it’s now available to everyone without cost. Talk about a player-friendly move!

It’s a shame to see a game with such potential end its development journey this way. Prologue was always more than just a survival game; it was a testing ground for PlayerUnknown Productions’ ambitious Melba engine, designed to create procedurally generated, earth-scale worlds. While Prologue’s development has ceased, the good news is that work on the Melba engine will continue, albeit with a smaller team. You can even check out their free tech demo, Preface: Undiscovered World, which is also in Early Access, to get a taste of the Melba engine’s capabilities.

The final update for Prologue: Go Wayback! does bring some new touches, like improved paths and trails, new items such as mobile weather monitors, and enhancements to systems like cooking, lighting, clouds, and fog. So, if you’re curious about this unique survival experience, now’s the perfect time to jump in – for free!

Note: PKR figures are approximate, based on a rate of Rs 280.00 per USD. Exchange rates fluctuate — please check the latest dollar rate for exact pricing.
