Major Changes at Xbox: Project Fantasy Funding Cut Leads to Layoffs

The gaming world is buzzing with news that Xbox is making significant changes, and unfortunately, it’s resulting in some tough times for developers. Reports are surfacing that IO Interactive, known for its work on the Hitman series and the recently released 007 First Light, will be facing layoffs due to the funding cuts on their upcoming title, Project Fantasy.

In an official statement, IO Interactive confirmed that their partnership with Xbox regarding Project Fantasy has come to a halt. They expressed their commitment to the game but acknowledged that this shift means difficult staffing decisions are on the horizon. “We are adapting to this new reality, and it’s impacting our team,” the studio noted, underscoring their dedication to supporting those affected during this challenging period.

While the studio didn’t explicitly name Xbox as their partner, a Microsoft spokesperson confirmed the funding cuts in a statement to the media. They reassured fans that the company’s overall investment in gaming remains stable, but clarified that they are shifting their focus to different projects. “We expect to invest about the same amount in content as we did last year, but the projects we’re backing are changing,” they said.

Originally, Xbox was set to publish Project Fantasy, which was touted as an exciting new online fantasy RPG when it was first announced in 2023. However, details about the game have been scarce since then. This news arrives just a month after the successful launch of 007 First Light, which received positive reviews and solid sales. Nonetheless, the future of this franchise remains uncertain, especially following recent comments from Amazon MGM, the rights holder for James Bond.

Despite the setbacks, IO Interactive remains passionate about Project Fantasy. “This is a game, a world, and an IP that we absolutely love and are 100% committed to,” they affirmed. “This incredible universe will see the light of day.”

The shake-up at Xbox has been anticipated since early June when CEO Asha Sharma and Chief Content Officer Matt Booty hinted at a significant “reset” within the company. There are rumors that several studios, including Double Fine, Ninja Theory, and Compulsion Games, could be facing either sales or closures. Reports suggest that even Arkane, the developer behind Dishonored and currently working on Marvel’s Blade, is at risk. Layoffs at Xbox are expected to start soon, marking a turbulent time for the gaming giant and its affiliates.
