Bungie’s Troubles Mount: Destiny 2 Patch Delayed, Bug Fixes Uncertain Post-Layoffs

Hey PakGamers! We know the gaming world has been a rollercoaster lately, with studio closures and layoffs becoming a grim reality for many. Even in this tough environment, it seems Bungie, the creators behind Destiny 2 and the upcoming Marathon, is having an especially rough go of it.

Things haven’t been smooth sailing for Bungie recently. Their new sci-fi FPS, Marathon, while getting some decent reviews, hasn’t quite hit the commercial success needed to step into Destiny 2’s massive shoes. Adding to the pressure, active development for Destiny 2 officially wrapped up last month, marking a significant shift for the long-running title.

Unfortunately, the turbulence hit home with a wave of massive layoffs that affected a huge chunk of the Destiny team, and even some members working on Marathon. Bungie themselves admitted that Destiny 2 “fell short of expectations” in recent years, which is a tough pill to swallow for any developer, let alone its dedicated fanbase.

Now, even though active development has ceased, Destiny 2 is very much alive and playable for the foreseeable future. In fact, it even saw a surge in player numbers last month! But with active players comes the inevitable: bug reports and performance issues. And this is where the recent changes at Bungie are really starting to show their impact.

Just recently, after the news of Bungie’s downsizing broke, the studio had to announce a delay for Destiny 2’s new patch. This update was originally expected to drop this week, but now, players will have to wait. The community, especially on platforms like Reddit, reacted with understandable skepticism and concern, with many wondering if this “delay” might turn into something more permanent.

However, Bungie has stepped in to reassure players. They’ve clarified that it’s “Not a forever delay” and that the patch will indeed “get out when possible.” They also shared a poignant detail: some of the fixes included in this delayed patch were worked on by team members who have since been laid off. The studio has asked fans to “show love to the team, past and present” when the patch eventually ships.

On top of the patch delay, players have been reporting various PC performance issues. When asked about these concerns, Bungie’s team responded by asking for specific “videos or examples” to help them pinpoint problems. They were candid, stating, “While we can’t promise a fix, we’ll see what we can do.” This level of transparency, while appreciated, also highlights the difficult position the remaining team is in.

It’s a stark reminder of the volatile state of the gaming industry right now. With teams and projects facing unprecedented challenges, it’s a tough time for developers and gamers alike. We’ll be keeping a close eye on Bungie and Destiny 2, hoping they can navigate these choppy waters.
