Future of Final Fantasy Remakes Looks Bright According to Square Enix

It looks like Square Enix has some exciting plans for the future of Final Fantasy remakes, and fans might be in for a treat! With the recent reveal of Final Fantasy Resonance, which boasts a charming 2.5D pixel art style, there’s a lot to be excited about. This spin-off, which feels like a fresh take on a mobile classic, is definitely hitting the nostalgic sweet spot for many gamers.

During a recent shareholders meeting, Square Enix was asked whether we could expect more smaller-scale projects like Resonance. The company hinted that they are keen on exploring remakes that focus on updating graphics while keeping the core traditional combat systems intact. This is a bit different from the massive open-world approach we saw with the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy.

While they didn’t give a definitive yes or no, Square Enix emphasized their focus on understanding what resonates with modern players. They stated, “As part of our market-in approach, we engage in trial and error to establish what is best for contemporary customers based on current market needs and trends.” In other words, they’re carefully watching player reactions and sales to determine their next steps.

This strategy makes a lot of sense! If a particular remake or new title sparks interest, you can bet they’ll want to capitalize on that success. Besides Resonance, last year also saw the release of Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles, which maintained the classic isometric visuals that fans adored.

Square Enix has previously embraced the 2.5D aesthetic with the Dragon Quest series, successfully bringing older titles to a new audience while maintaining their charm. Imagine the possibilities for early Final Fantasy titles if they get a similar treatment! With the 17th mainline game and other remakes on the horizon, there’s plenty of room for excitement.

While Square Enix doesn’t guarantee that games will stay playable indefinitely, they’re committed to finding ways for fans to enjoy their classics, even after online services come to an end. So, as we eagerly await what’s next, it seems like there’s a good chance we’ll see more remakes that honor the beloved original games. I know I’m diving into Resonance, and I can’t wait to see what you all think!
