Dave Grohl Thinks Kurt Cobain Would Have Loved This New Anime Series!

Exciting news for anime fans and music lovers alike! The popular Yuri web comic, The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn’t A Guy at All, is making its way to the small screen with an anime adaptation set to launch in January 2027. Crunchyroll dropped this gem during Anime Expo, and it’s already generating plenty of buzz.

What makes this announcement even more thrilling is the endorsement from none other than Dave Grohl, the legendary drummer of Nirvana and frontman of Foo Fighters. In a recent interview, he expressed his belief that the late Kurt Cobain would have totally vibed with this series. With Grohl’s connection to Cobain, fans are eager to see what he has to say about it.

The anime centers around two Japanese high school girls who bond over their shared love for Western rock music while spending time in a music shop. One girl finds herself crushing on the other, unknowingly captivated by her punk-styled classmate, which leads to a beautiful friendship that blossoms into something deeper.

In a delightful twist, the opening theme for the series will be Nirvana’s hit song Breed. This is a significant achievement for an anime studio, as landing such a renowned band is no small feat. Aniplex, the parent company of CloverWorks (the studio bringing this adaptation to life), even shared a clip of Grohl discussing the song and his thoughts on the series with the manga’s creator, Sumiko Arai.

Grohl reminisced about how Breed was his favorite song to kick off performances, reminiscing about a benefit concert where they played it. He proudly held a physical copy of the manga and remarked, “I think that Kurt definitely would’ve loved this.” When asked if he was serious, Grohl confidently replied, “Oh my god, yeah, of course!” He felt that the series encapsulated a similar message and aesthetic that Cobain would have appreciated.

Cobain was a well-known advocate for the LGBTQ community, famously stating in Nirvana’s 1992 album notes that anyone harboring hate towards marginalized groups should steer clear of their music. It’s heartwarming to see this connection as the anime strives to spread a positive message of love and acceptance.

With a fantastic playlist already lined up for the anime, Grohl was visibly impressed, calling it “incredible” and praising the music taste involved. As one of the standout manga of 2024, The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn’t A Guy at All holds promise and is definitely on many fans’ watchlists.

With the release of Delicious in Dungeon season 2 also on the horizon, 2027 is shaping up to be an exceptional year for anime enthusiasts everywhere!
