Hasbro Pulls the Plug on D&D Game by Jedi: Fallen Order Director
Big news in the gaming world! Hasbro has officially scrapped an upcoming Dungeons & Dragons title that was being developed by Giant Skull, the studio helmed by none other than Stig Asmussen, the director famous for Jedi: Fallen Order. He’s also known for his contributions to the God of War series.
This partnership was just announced last summer, so it’s quite a surprise that the deal was terminated only a few months later. According to reports, Wizards of the Coast, which manages D&D, decided not to move forward with an early concept from Giant Skull. However, they’re still open to pitches from the studio, which is a silver lining for fans hoping for future collaborations.
Stig Asmussen seems to be taking this news in stride, mentioning that there are no hard feelings and that everything is “good” at Giant Skull. When the project was first revealed, Wizards of the Coast’s president, John Hight, had expressed confidence that Giant Skull was the ideal match for the game, emphasizing its potential for immersive storytelling and thrilling combat. It sounded like we were in for an action-adventure ride reminiscent of Asmussen’s past projects.
But it’s not all doom and gloom for D&D fans! Another project, titled Warlock, is still on track. This game, developed by Invoke Studios, the creators behind Dungeons & Dragons: Dark Alliance, is set for release in 2027. With the massive success of Baldur’s Gate 3, it wouldn’t be surprising if Wizards of the Coast had more surprises in store, including a potential new CRPG to capitalize on that momentum.
In addition, there’s ongoing buzz about a Baldur’s Gate HBO series and a prequel novel focused on Astarion. While the focus for marketing right now seems to be on the upcoming Mass Effect-like RPG titled Exodus, the D&D universe is definitely still alive and kicking.
