Live-Action vs Animation: The Wandering Inn Author Weighs In

The LitRPG genre has been making waves recently, with hits like Dungeon Crawler Carl bringing it to the forefront. One of the key figures in this scene is Matt Dinniman, whose action-packed series not only thrives in audiobooks but is also getting ready for a live-action series on Peacock. While this news excites many fans of Dungeon Crawler Carl and the broader LitRPG community, some folks are raising eyebrows about the choice of live-action instead of animation.

Dinniman has defended this direction, stating that a significant portion of audiences might prefer live-action, as long as the final product is visually appealing. However, it seems not everyone shares his enthusiasm for this format.

In an engaging chat with Pirateaba, the author behind the beloved LitRPG series The Wandering Inn, they made it clear that their vision for a TV adaptation would lean heavily towards animation. Unlike Dinniman, Pirateaba believes that an animated series could do justice to their intricate characters and storyline.

“I definitely envision a TV show in the future, but it has to be animated,” Pirateaba expressed. “There are so many animation styles, especially in the West and anime, that would suit my story. Trying to represent complex beings like Antinium or Drakes with CGI or live-action would likely lead to disaster,” they added.

Even though live-action shows are dominating streaming platforms lately, numerous animated series have thrived, proving that the medium can effectively capture the essence of RPG adventures. For instance, the popularity of shows like Sword Art Online showcases how animation can resonate with audiences.

“There are countless fantasy adaptations that crashed and burned. It can be tough to execute properly, and production hurdles often get in the way,” Pirateaba noted. “You don’t get endless chances, especially with stories that are as vast and intricate as these.”

While there are no current plans for a TV adaptation of The Wandering Inn, Pirateaba’s self-publishing journey mirrors that of Dungeon Crawler Carl, leaving the door open for future possibilities. Yet, if the chance for a TV project came knocking, their priority would be to collaborate with the right team.

“If I were to consider working with anyone, it wouldn’t be the usual big players like Netflix or Amazon. I’d want to have a solid discussion with the director and ensure everything is clear, much like Brandon Sanderson did,” they concluded.
