Love and Deepspace Drama: Valko’s Fallout and What It Means for Fans

Whether you’re a fan of dating sims or not, the drama surrounding Love and Deepspace has definitely caught the attention of gamers everywhere. The recent uproar isn’t about the game’s steamy content or its gacha mechanics; it’s all about Valko, the sixth love interest who was introduced and then swiftly yanked from the game.

New developments have emerged, and they’re not great for those hoping to see Valko make a comeback. Reports indicate that Papergames is pulling its booth from the massive BilliBilli World 2026 convention, a significant event in the Asian gaming calendar. This decision follows a noticeable absence of Valko at last week’s Anime Expo, where a booth meant for a Valko cosplayer stood empty. The phrasing used in Papergames’ announcement raises eyebrows, hinting at the seriousness of the situation:

“Love and Deepspace has gained widespread attention, leading to distress among players and a negative impact overall. We deeply regret this situation and admit our faults. We acknowledge our responsibilities and will strive to improve,” said a representative from the company.

The situation only gets more complicated. Following Valko’s removal, a divide appears to be forming between fans in China, who largely want Valko out, and Western audiences, who are advocating for his return. Chinese players have been vocal online about their reasons for opposing Valko: he distracts from the main storyline, doesn’t align with local beauty standards, and his promotional lines could be interpreted as endorsing dangerous ideas.

Shortly after Papergames’ booth withdrawal, the Chinese government also weighed in. A representative from the Ministry of Public Security criticized the game’s portrayal of events where a male character enters a woman’s home at night, framing it as a romantic scenario. They stated that such narratives could undermine public morality and safety, calling for stricter boundaries in gaming content.

The government’s stance is clear: any game that appears to glamorize illegal activities is risking serious repercussions. The official statement even referenced a tragic incident from 2018 to highlight the potential dangers of violent game content on youth.

As a result, Papergames has reportedly taken all related characters and storylines offline for adjustments, indicating a commitment to address public concerns. However, this situation serves as a wake-up call for developers everywhere. There’s a pressing need to ensure that content doesn’t blur ethical lines or promote harmful behaviors.

Things are looking dicey for Papergames. With the Chinese government stepping in and the backlash intensifying, it seems unlikely Valko will return anytime soon. This scandal could lead to increased scrutiny towards Love and Deepspace, especially considering the game’s history of controversial themes. Previous love interests have also engaged in troubling behaviors, raising questions about the game’s future.

While petitions to bring Valko back have amassed nearly 250,000 signatures, it’s hard to see this leading to any significant change in the current climate. Gamers will have to stay tuned as this saga continues to unfold.
