Path of Exile’s Co-Creator Shows Off Epic Magic: The Gathering Collection

In a jaw-dropping revelation, Chris Wilson, the co-founder of Grinding Gear Games and the brains behind Path of Exile, has shared a glimpse into his astonishing Magic: The Gathering collection. Once upon a time, Wilson sold some of his prized Magic cards to help fund the development of Path of Exile, but it seems he has since bounced back in a big way.

In a new video, Wilson showcases what could easily be one of the largest and most valuable Magic collections on the planet. You can practically feel the excitement as he flips through page after page packed with rare and sought-after cards from the game’s early days. We’re talking about a treasure trove that includes iconic sets like Alpha, Legends, and Antiquities, showcasing his deep love for the game. It truly feels like you’re watching a dragon unveil his hoard of gold.

The star of this collection is undoubtedly the 14 copies of the legendary Black Lotus, arguably the most famous card in Magic history. Wilson has 12 of these beauties safely tucked away in a binder, while two more are meticulously graded and encased in protective slabs. This small stack represents a staggering amount of value, as each of these Alpha copies can easily fetch five figures, with some even being sold for upwards of a million by private collectors!

But wait, there’s more! Wilson’s collection isn’t just about Black Lotus; he also boasts a mind-blowing number of other rare cards. For instance, he has an impressive 24 copies of The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale, a highly coveted land card that can sell for thousands. His binders are filled with an array of hard-to-find cards that most players could only dream of owning.

The video feels surreal as Wilson dives into the coveted “Power Nine,” a set of cards that changed the game significantly. These cards, which provide enormous advantages, are like the holy grail of Magic: The Gathering. While he casually showcases his pristine Alpha Mox artifacts, it’s evident that Wilson has a significant chunk of the Alpha market under his control.

Reflecting on his collection, Wilson states, “Alpha is special because it represents the original history of the game. These are the cards that set everything in motion.” His enthusiasm is palpable as he reminisces about a time when the game was in its formative years, and he treasures the nostalgia these cards evoke.

This incredible collection, featuring signed Alpha cards and other standout pieces, has left the Magic community buzzing. Wilson’s passion shines through as he appreciates the artistry and history behind these old cards, reminding us all why Magic: The Gathering continues to captivate fans around the world.
