Microsoft Plans to Turbocharge Development for Key Game Franchises
The revival of Xbox is gaining momentum, but there’s still a long way to go and a lot of uncertainty ahead. While console exclusives are making a comeback, the extent of this shift remains to be seen. Unfortunately, this “reset” for a brighter future could also lead to job cuts among staff. According to recent insights, Microsoft is contemplating a shift in focus towards its most significant game franchises while exploring the possibility of spinning off the Xbox division altogether.
According to sources, Microsoft hasn’t completely ruled out the idea of turning Xbox into a standalone entity or a fully-owned subsidiary. They’re even considering partnerships with unnamed collaborators, which might pave the way for a smoother sale post-restructuring. While no immediate changes are on the horizon, everything seems to be up for evaluation.
In exciting news for gamers, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma’s strategy to increase investment in major series like Halo, Fallout, and The Elder Scrolls has received the green light from top executives, including CEO Satya Nadella and CFO Amy Hood. However, the exact budget for this initiative is still being finalized.
The main aim behind this boost in funding is to speed up game development, and who can blame them? It’s been a staggering 11 years since Fallout 4 launched, 15 years since Skyrim graced our screens, and eight years since The Elder Scrolls 6 was first teased—yet we’re still waiting for more than just a vague teaser. Halo hasn’t had an easy run either; as noted by a fellow gaming journalist, the franchise has been pretty stagnant since Microsoft established 343 Industries after Bungie departed almost 15 years ago. Halo Infinite, which was supposed to elevate the series into a live service model, halted new content updates just four years post-launch.
While no one is suggesting we need annual Bethesda RPGs, it’s clear why Microsoft feels the pressure to expedite development. However, history teaches us that simply throwing money at a problem doesn’t always yield the desired results. Microsoft boasts an impressive portfolio, owning some of the most iconic gaming franchises, but whether they can leverage that effectively—and whether they even want to—remains uncertain. We’ll keep an eye out for any updates from Microsoft regarding the potential Xbox spinoff as we inch closer to the future of gaming.
