Final Fantasy 7 Revelation Director Pushes for Physical Release
The conversation surrounding physical game media is heating up, especially with Sony’s recent announcement that they’ll stop producing PlayStation discs by January 2028. Amidst this shift, Naoki Hamaguchi, the director of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, is advocating for the release of a physical edition of the game.
In a chat with GamesRadar+ on July 29, Hamaguchi acknowledged the clear trend towards digital downloads. Still, he passionately believes that physical copies represent “a wonderful culture” in gaming, emphasizing that it would be a shame to see that tradition fade away. He and his team are committed to making sure Revelation gets a physical edition.
“We’re in the midst of discussions about the specific product lineup for Revelation,” Hamaguchi shared during the Final Fantasy 14 Fan Festival in Berlin. “I can’t provide any concrete details right now, but I’m working hard to ensure we can offer some type of physical edition.”
While he wasn’t able to reveal what form this physical edition might take, he mentioned that various platforms have distinct regulations that will influence the final product. “For example, when dealing with Nintendo, we have to consider storage limits on cartridges, while other platforms have their own constraints regarding what can fit on a disc,” he explained. “We’re currently weighing these factors to determine the best format for the game. I really hope we can create something that resonates with what players want, but stay tuned for future updates!”
As the third and final chapter of the remake trilogy, Revelation follows its predecessors, Remake and Rebirth, both of which had physical versions for PlayStation 5. Given that Revelation is set to launch in 2027, it seems likely that it will also receive a physical edition on PS5, especially since Sony won’t stop disc production until 2028. However, there’s a chance that, similar to Grand Theft Auto 6, it could just come as a code inside a box. We’ll have to wait and see!
Though Revelation wraps up Cloud’s journey with his friends, it might not be the end of the gameplay experience. Recent leaks hint at an array of downloadable content (DLC), including a “Story Expansion Pass” that may take players to new territories with Cloud and his gang. Exciting times ahead for fans!
