Game Pass Too Pricey? Xbox’s New Boss Says “Absolutely!” – What This Means For Your Gaming Budget

Hold onto your controllers, PakGamers! There’s a major ripple in the gaming world, and it directly concerns our beloved Xbox Game Pass. The newly appointed head of Xbox, Asha Sharma, has reportedly sent an internal memo to staff, making a rather candid admission: Game Pass has become “too expensive” for players, and the current model isn’t sustainable.

This isn’t just a casual chat; this internal communication, which The Verge got a peek at, strongly hints that a significant overhaul of the subscription service is on the horizon. Sharma’s words were clear: “Game Pass is central to gaming value on Xbox. It’s also clear that the current model isn’t the final one. Short term, Game Pass has become too expensive for players, so we need a better value equation. Long term, we will evolve Game Pass into a more flexible system which will take time to test and learn around.”

For many of us, this news might feel like a validation of long-held concerns. It was only about six months ago that Xbox Game Pass saw a substantial price hike, which many gamers felt was the tipping point. To put it into perspective: Game Pass Ultimate jumped a whopping 50% from $19.99 to $29.99 per month. PC Game Pass also saw a notable increase, from $11.99 to $16.49. For Pakistani gamers, where every dollar counts, these increases translate to a significant dent in our monthly budgets.

Remember the good old days of 2017? Game Pass launched with a simple promise: pay $9.99 and get access to a massive library of games. Fast forward to today, and that simplicity has faded. We’re now navigating a maze of Ultimate, Premium, and Essential tiers, often left scratching our heads trying to figure out which one includes hotly anticipated titles like Silksong or upcoming Xbox exclusives such as Fable on day one. (Spoiler: it’s usually the priciest Ultimate tier).

But it’s not just the players feeling the pinch. The very concept of Game Pass – often dubbed the “Netflix for games” – has started to rub developers the wrong way. Many studios are questioning the financial viability when their games hit the service. The director of ‘Revenge of the Savage Planet’ famously remarked, “If you give stuff for free, what you’ve done is told people not to pay for it,” after his game gained popularity on Game Pass but struggled to generate direct sales revenue. Former Bethesda VP Pete Hines echoed this sentiment, stating that “the majority of game adoption on GP comes at the expense of retail revenue.” Even former Sony executive Shawn Layden didn’t mince words last August, likening game subscription models to “wage slavery.”

What does this mean for the future? Under Sharma’s leadership, it seems Xbox is gearing up for some significant shifts. The company appears to be refocusing its efforts on strengthening its core console hardware, even reportedly phasing out its ambitious plans.
