Charlie Cox Dips His Toes Into Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

Not every actor feels the need to dive into the video games they’re linked to, and that’s totally cool! Just take Walton Goggins, for example—he’s openly admitted that he hasn’t touched Fallout and has no plans to. Honestly, that’s a wise choice. Who wants to get caught up in the endless debate about whether Fallout 2 lives up to the original? Sometimes, it’s better to stay clear of the gaming rabbit hole!

When Charlie Cox, known for his role as Daredevil and the voice of Gustave in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, revealed that he hadn’t played the game yet, I thought that was understandable. I mean, it’s a hefty 45-hour JRPG with an ending that seems to divide opinions. Who has the time for that when you’re busy maintaining those superhero abs?

But guess what? In a recent chat with our friends at GamesRadar, Cox dropped the news that he finally took a stab at it—kind of! He admitted, “Not the whole thing,” and added that he hasn’t reached the finish line yet. He’s explored the impressive intro and met some characters but joked, “Not very well.”

Cox also compared Clair Obscur to the games he enjoyed growing up, like Goldeneye, Mario Kart, and FIFA 98, noting how different the storytelling feels. “These old games didn’t have such intricately woven stories. You discover things as you progress, instead of everything being laid out for you right away,” he explained.

It must be a wild experience hearing your own voice come out of a character you’ve played! Cox mentioned it didn’t quite feel like him but rather like he was stepping into Gustave’s shoes. “I didn’t really think of it as me; I thought of it as Gustave,” he said.

As for whether he plans on finishing the game, he seemed a bit skeptical. “There are people who’ve played it, completed it, and even 100%ed it— which could take 50 to 100 hours of gameplay,” he remarked, clearly taken aback. And honestly, with that kind of time commitment, who can blame him for hesitating?
