The Near Future: 2026 & 2027 Blockbusters
First up, let’s talk about the movies hitting screens in the next couple of years:
Toy Story 5 (June 19, 2026)
Our beloved toys are back! This time, it’s a classic toys-vs-tech showdown. Bonnie gets a new tablet, Lilypad, threatening to change playtime forever. This brings Woody back into the fold after his adventures in Toy Story 4, and we might just get some answers about screen time dilemmas many parents face today. Expect new toy characters like Atlas, a cheerful GPS hippo, Snappy the camera toy, and Dr. Nutcase, a tech-fearing toy. And yes, Keanu Reeves is confirmed to return as our favorite Canadian daredevil, Duke Caboom!
Moana (Live-Action Remake) (July 10, 2026)
The ocean is calling again! This live-action take on the 2016 animated hit will follow the same enchanting story: a young girl chosen by the ocean must reunite an ancient relic with the goddess Te Fiti, aided by the demigod Maui. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is not only producing but also reprising his role as Maui! While Auli’i Cravalho won’t be playing Moana this time (Catherine Laga’aia steps into the role), she’s on board as an executive producer.
Hexed (November 25, 2026)
Get ready for a brand new animated adventure from Walt Disney Animation Studios! Hexed introduces us to Billie (voiced by Hailee Steinfeld), a quirky teenager who discovers she might actually be magical. With her mom, Alice (Rashida Jones), by her side, Billie stumbles upon a secret world of magic called Hex. We hear there’s an ancient talking book and a magical pen involved – sounds like a spellbinding mystery!
Gatto (March 5, 2027)
After Toy Story 5, Pixar is taking us to Venice, Italy, with Gatto. Directed by Enrico Casarosa of Luca fame, this film follows Nero, a black cat indebted to a feline mob boss. The catch? Nero absolutely HATES water, which is hilarious considering he lives in Venice! He’s forced to team up with a lonely street musician named Maya, and this unexpected friendship might just lead him to his true purpose.
Bluey: The Movie (August 6, 2027)
Good news for fans of the adorable blue heeler pup! Bluey is finally getting its first-ever animated feature film. Creator Joe Brum is writing and directing, with the original voice cast, including Melanie Zanetti (Chili) and David McCormack (Bandit), returning. Details on the plot are still under wraps, but expect the same heartwarming and fun family vibes that the series delivers!
Frozen 3 (November 24, 2027) & Frozen 4 (Date TBD)
Yes, you read that right – not one, but TWO more Frozen films are on the way! Bob Iger confirmed these sequels a while back, and while details are scarce, Frozen 3 is expected to pick up after Frozen 2, with Anna as Queen of Arendelle and Elsa embracing her role as the fifth spirit in the Enchanted Forest. Jennifer Lee, the creative force behind Frozen, hinted that there are still many questions to answer, which is why they need two films to tell the full story. Get ready for more snow, songs, and sisterly love!
Further Down the Road: 2028 & Beyond
The magic continues with more exciting projects that are a bit further out or still awaiting concrete release dates:
Lilo & Stitch 2 (Live-Action) (May 26, 2028)
The first live-action Lilo & Stitch was a massive hit, raking in over $1.03 billion globally, so it’s no surprise Disney is bringing our favorite Hawaiian duo back for more! Details about the story are under wraps, but we can’t wait to see what adventures Lilo and Stitch embark on next.
Incredibles 3 (June 16, 2028)
Our favorite superhero family is making a comeback! While Brad Bird directed the first two films, there’s talk that Peter Sohn, the director of Elemental, might take the helm for Incredibles 3. Either way, we’re super excited to see what new challenges the Parr family will face.
Coco 2 (Date TBD)
Get ready to return to the vibrant Land of the Dead! Pixar’s beloved Coco is officially getting a sequel, with director Lee Unkrich, co-director Adrian Molina, and producer Mark Nielsen all returning. Plus, Disneyland is even getting a Coco attraction, so the future for this heartwarming story looks bright!
Tangled (Live-Action Remake) (Date TBD)
Rapunzel’s story is getting a live-action makeover! We already know some exciting cast members: Teagan Croft (from Titans) as Rapunzel, Milo Manheim (from Zombies) as Flynn Rider, and Kathryn Hahn (from Agatha All Along) as Mother Gothel. After a brief pause, it seems the production is back on track!
Hercules (Live-Action Remake) (Date TBD)
Who put the “glad” in “gladiator”? Guy Ritchie, who previously directed the live-action Aladdin, is set to direct Hercules. The Russo brothers (yes, the guys behind Avengers: Endgame!) are producing. There’s even talk of Danny DeVito possibly reprising his role as Phil! Interestingly, the filmmakers are looking at TikTok for inspiration to give this musical a modern spin, which sounds like it could be a lot of fun!
Gaston (Live-Action) (Date TBD)
Believe it or not, the villainous Gaston from Beauty and the Beast is getting his own live-action spin-off! Disney is reportedly aiming for a “swashbuckling” take on the character, so expect an entirely new adventure centered around this infamous antagonist.
Bambi (Live-Action Remake) (Status Unknown)
A live-action version of Bambi is also in development. The plan is to use photorealistic CGI for the animal characters, similar to The Lion King remake. Interestingly, the producers are considering toning down Bambi’s mother’s death to make it less traumatic for modern audiences. Academy Award-winning director Sarah Polley is reportedly attached to direct.
Disney Parks Come to Life on the Big Screen
Beyond the classic animated films, Disney is also looking to turn some of its iconic theme park attractions into cinematic experiences:
Club 33 Movie (Status Unknown)
Disneyland’s exclusive Club 33 is inspiring a new mystery film! Described as having the tone of Clue and Night at the Museum, the story will follow a young detective who receives a mysterious invite to a version of Club 33 that exists outside of time and space. A murder at the club kicks off her investigation – sounds like a thrilling ride!
Space Mountain Movie (Status Unknown)
The classic thrill ride Space Mountain is slated for a movie adaptation. The latest update suggests Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec, known for Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop, are writing the script.
Big Thunder Mountain Movie (Status Unknown)
Another beloved Disney Parks ride, Big Thunder Mountain, is also getting the big-screen treatment. While details are scarce, Bert & Bertie, known for directing Hawkeye, are reportedly attached to direct. Disney has tried to adapt this ride before, so fingers crossed this one sees the light of day!
Phew! That’s a whole lot of Disney and Pixar goodness coming our way. Which of these movies are you most excited for, bhai? Let us know in the comments!
