Get Ready for the Wild West with Robot Wizards in Far Far West!
Steam’s recent Next Fest brought us a delightful surprise with the launch of Far Far West, a co-op first-person shooter that blends robot cowboys with magic spells—yes, you heard that right! This unique title has quickly shot to fame, becoming one of the top five most-played demos during the event, with over 6,000 reviews giving it an Overwhelmingly Positive rating. Talk about a hit!
The brains behind this exciting project, Nicolas Meyssonnier, who leads the indie studio Evil Raptor, shared that they were taken aback by the overwhelming response. Coming from a background of creating niche 3D platformers, the team was unprepared for the massive wave of enthusiasm. “We really didn’t expect so many people to show up,” he admitted. “This is all new territory for us!”
Meyssonnier explained that their transition from developing single-player games to a multiplayer FPS was quite the learning curve. Their previous title, Pumpkin Jack, was a solo adventure, and this shift meant they had to quickly adapt to new design and technical challenges. “We had to learn everything from managing bandwidth to optimizing for players with lower-end setups,” he noted.
The concept of robot wizard cowboys originated from a mix of strategy and fun. The team noticed a lack of stylized Western games on Steam, which inspired them to fill that gap. “We wanted something that stands out, and what’s cooler than magic-wielding robots?” Meyssonnier elaborated with a chuckle. The team cleverly chose robots for technical reasons too; animating them was simpler than creating realistic human models.
As playtesting progressed, the creators realized that their gunplay needed a little extra flair. Enter: magic spells! “We wanted to add more layers to the gameplay, and who doesn’t love a good spell?” said Arnaud Petit, one of the developers. This addition not only brought variety to combat but also encouraged teamwork, as players can combine spells and gunfire for epic results.
As the early access release date approaches, Meyssonnier expressed both excitement and a bit of nervousness. “Imposter syndrome is real, especially after such a positive demo!” he confessed. But the team remains focused on creating a game that they themselves would love to play.
Mark your calendars: Far Far West is set to launch in early access on Steam on April 28. Get ready to saddle up and dive into this wacky world!
