Jesse Eisenberg Passes on Reprising Zuckerberg Role in The Social Reckoning

In a recent reveal, it looks like Jesse Eisenberg won’t be stepping back into the shoes of Mark Zuckerberg for the upcoming film, The Social Reckoning. Aaron Sorkin, the writer and director behind this sequel, spent three days trying to persuade Eisenberg to return to the role that made him a household name, but to no avail.

Eisenberg, known for his performances in hits like Zombieland and Now You See Me, gained significant acclaim for his portrayal of Zuckerberg in The Social Network. That film, directed by David Fincher, even snagged him an Oscar nomination, thanks to its unforgettable scenes and gripping storytelling. But now, with The Social Reckoning on the horizon, fans are left wondering why he chose not to reprise his iconic role.

Sorkin, who also penned the original film, shared some details about Eisenberg’s reluctance in a chat with Vanity Fair. He emphasized that he believed the character truly belonged to Eisenberg, who had certainly built a reputation in Hollywood. However, the actor has made it quite clear that he wants to distance himself from the controversial tech mogul.

“He simply did not want to be conflated with Mark Zuckerberg anymore, that he has his problems with the guy,” Sorkin explained. He even mentioned that Eisenberg isn’t fond of fans approaching him in airports with business cards that read, “I’m CEO, bitch,” asking for his autograph.

Interestingly, Sorkin first broached the idea of Eisenberg reading the script at an Oscar party back in 2025. During that same event, Succession star Jeremy Strong expressed interest in taking on the role if it turned out Eisenberg wasn’t on board.

In October of the same year, Eisenberg elaborated on his decision during an interview, noting that he felt he had “outgrown” the character. He reassured fans that his choice had no reflection on the quality of the film, expressing his fondness for Sorkin and the project itself. “It’s a really wonderful movie, but I’ve moved on,” he stated.

The Social Reckoning, which will present a more recent take on Zuckerberg and the impact of social media, is set to hit theaters on October 9, 2026. Even without Eisenberg, fans are eager to see how this sequel will unfold.
