Activision Finally Fixes Modern Warfare 2’s Dangerous PC Security Flaws After 17 Years

Activision has released a major security update for the PC version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009), addressing the long-running Remote Code Execution vulnerabilities that have made playing the classic shooter online a potential security risk.

The update was released this week and reportedly fixes “all known vulnerabilities” affecting the game, including its notorious RCE exploits.

Why the RCE Vulnerabilities Were So Serious

Remote Code Execution vulnerabilities are particularly dangerous because, under the right circumstances, they can allow an attacker to execute malicious code on another person’s computer remotely.

For Modern Warfare 2 players, the concern centered around the game’s multiplayer functionality. A vulnerable player connecting to an online match could potentially be exposed to malicious activity without knowingly downloading suspicious software themselves.

The security problems became especially concerning as the original Modern Warfare 2 continued to maintain a dedicated PC community long after its 2009 release.

Activision Finally Addresses the Problem

Nearly 17 years after Modern Warfare 2 originally launched, Activision has now stepped in with an update designed to secure the PC version of the game.

According to the information accompanying the update, “all known vulnerabilities” have now been addressed.

It’s an important update for anyone who still enjoys returning to the original Modern Warfare 2, particularly those interested in its multiplayer.

A Classic Call of Duty Gets Some Much-Needed Attention

Modern Warfare 2 remains one of the most recognizable entries in the Call of Duty franchise. Released in 2009, the game introduced millions of players to iconic multiplayer maps, weapons and killstreaks that helped define Call of Duty’s explosive growth during the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 generation.

Seeing Activision continue to patch such an old title is therefore significant.

While the update doesn’t suddenly modernize the game’s aging multiplayer infrastructure, closing known RCE vulnerabilities removes one of the biggest security concerns surrounding the PC version.

For players who have avoided Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer because of the reported security risks, this patch could make revisiting the classic considerably more appealing.
