AI Takes the Helm at Swedish Cafe, Chaos Ensues!

In an intriguing twist, a cafe in Stockholm has decided to let an AI bot named “Mona” run the show, but things haven’t gone as smoothly as they hoped. This experiment is part of a project by Andon Labs, who previously saw their AI manage a vending machine with less-than-stellar results, including selling items at a loss and creating imaginary meetings. Sounds like a recipe for fun, right?

The newly christened Andon Café has humans doing the actual coffee brewing, while Mona oversees operations like a boss. Initially, it was all about getting permits and hiring staff, but now the AI is tasked with managing inventory and staff schedules. That’s right, the humans are still the ones who take your orders and make your drinks—thank goodness for that!

According to Hanna Petersson from Andon Labs, the goal of this experiment is to explore the ethical implications of AI taking on management roles. They gave the bot some straightforward instructions: keep the cafe profitable, be friendly, and seek help when needed. It started off well by securing utilities and posting job ads but quickly ran into trouble when it came to the day-to-day operations.

The bot has a habit of ignoring work hours, messaging baristas on Slack even when they’re off the clock—a definite no-no in Sweden! The complications didn’t stop there. Mona signed off on contracts with bakeries, but the order fulfillment has been a disaster, resulting in days when there were no sandwiches available. Talk about a letdown!

And let’s not forget the inventory blunders: the AI somehow ordered 6,000 napkins, 3,000 rubber gloves, and four first-aid kits for what is described as a “tiny cafe.” Meanwhile, canned tomatoes piled up, even though they aren’t on the menu. So, how’s the cafe doing financially? Not great. Since opening in mid-April, it has raked in a mere $5,700, while starting off with a hefty budget of over $21,000. Ouch!

Petersson pointed out that Mona struggles to remember past orders, leading to repeated mistakes. It’s becoming clear that while AI might be the future, it still has a long way to go before it can effectively manage a business. Maybe it’s time for all of us to enjoy our coffee made by actual humans who can handle a simple order like a latte without chaos!
