Apple Could Enter the Gaming Controller Market With New Beats-Branded iPhone Controllers
Apple could be preparing to make a much bigger push into mobile gaming hardware, with a new report claiming the company has been developing its own gaming controllers for the iPhone.
According to Bloomberg, Apple has been working on an iPhone gaming controller for more than a year. The accessory would put Apple in direct competition with established third-party mobile controllers that turn the iPhone into something closer to a traditional handheld gaming system.
Interestingly, the controllers are reportedly expected to launch under Apple’s Beats brand rather than carrying the standard Apple branding.
Two Controller Models May Already Be in Development
Apple’s software has reportedly contained references to two controller models identified as T6502 and T1057.
While internal model numbers don’t guarantee that a product will eventually reach consumers, their appearance in Apple’s software could indicate that development has progressed beyond the earliest concept stage.
The controllers are also expected to feature haptic feedback, potentially giving games more immersive vibration and physical feedback during gameplay.
Details about the exact design remain unclear. Apple could opt for a controller that attaches directly to both sides of an iPhone, similar to many existing mobile gaming accessories, or pursue a more traditional wireless controller design.
Apple Could Take Mobile Gaming More Seriously
An official controller would give Apple a stronger presence in the increasingly competitive mobile and handheld gaming market.
Modern iPhones already have enough performance to run increasingly demanding games, while Apple has spent the past few years bringing major console and PC titles to its devices. An Apple-designed controller could help make the iPhone a more complete portable gaming platform rather than relying entirely on accessories made by other companies.
Launching it through Beats would also be an interesting strategy. Beats already operates as Apple’s accessory-focused brand, primarily known for headphones and audio products, so expanding it into gaming hardware could allow Apple to experiment with the market without creating an entirely new gaming brand.
There is still no official announcement, pricing, design, or release date for the reported controllers, and Apple could ultimately change or cancel the project before launch.
However, if the controllers do make it to market, Apple could soon be competing directly with some of the biggest names in mobile gaming accessories — while giving iPhone owners an official way to turn their phones into handheld gaming machines.
