Barbie 2 Faces Uncertainty as Deal Deadline Approaches

It looks like the future of Barbie 2 is hanging by a thread! Reports indicate that negotiations between Warner Bros. and the creative minds behind the original film have hit a snag. If they can’t strike a deal by December 2026, they risk losing key figures like director Greta Gerwig, writer Noah Baumbach, and stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling.

This behind-the-scenes update sheds light on the sequel to last year’s massive hit, which raked in an astonishing $1.5 (approx. Rs 420) billion at the box office. You’d think there would be more progress by now, but it seems Warner Bros. and the team are stuck in a prolonged standoff.

Sources suggest that there’s been no agreement on how to bring back the talented cast and crew for Barbie 2. Warner Bros. has reportedly offered them a cut of the box office profits along with raises—including meeting Gosling’s hefty $20 (approx. Rs 5,560) million asking price. However, current CEO David Zaslav thinks those offers are a bit too generous and hasn’t given the green light yet.

Adding to the confusion, a representative from Warner Bros. countered that the talent’s representatives turned down an offer made earlier this year and have yet to provide a counteroffer. Time isn’t on their side, as the clock is ticking.

If no agreement is reached by the end of December, the rights to the franchise will revert back to Mattel. While this could potentially lead to a new live-action Barbie movie at a different studio, it would mean starting fresh without Gerwig, Baumbach, Robbie, or Gosling. Plus, any new project wouldn’t be able to incorporate the story elements from the first film.

In a joint statement, Warner Bros. co-chairs Pam Abdy and Michael De Luca mentioned, “We have a rights deal with Mattel and have made significant offers to finalize deals for the next Barbie film. Unfortunately, we have yet to reach an agreement.”

It’s hard to imagine Barbie without the talented team that brought it to life, especially since the first film received rave reviews and accolades for its unique take on the character. Gerwig recently expressed her enthusiasm for a sequel, saying, “I want to do it,” but both she and Robbie have acknowledged that the wait might be a long one.

Gerwig and Baumbach are reportedly ready with a story for Barbie 2, but that’s all on hold until a deal is finalized. With progress stalled, it might be years before we see another Barbie adventure. For now, we can enjoy the original film, which was praised by IGN with a stellar 9/10 for its insightful exploration of femininity and societal pressures.
