Beast of Reincarnation: A Mix of Ambition and Missed Opportunities

Game Freak’s latest title, Beast of Reincarnation, kicks off with an intriguing option to play in cinematic mode. This setting locks cutscenes to a classic 24 frames per second, while gameplay runs at a higher frame rate. At first glance, it seemed like a bold move for a studio known for the Pokémon franchise—definitely not famous for its cinematic flair. However, after spending about 90 minutes with the game, it became clear that despite some visually stunning moments, the overall cinematic experience leaves much to be desired.

Set in the year 4026, Beast of Reincarnation presents a post-apocalyptic world where a mysterious plague known as The Blight has ravaged humanity and wildlife, causing humans and animals to sprout vegetation. To combat this, people have transferred their souls into mechanical beings called golems, an act that led to unintended consequences, such as corrupting those very machines. The game’s narrative features interesting elements from various sci-fi subgenres, blending biopunk, cyberpunk, and solarpunk aesthetics. Unfortunately, while the world has potential, it struggles to maintain engagement.

The art direction boasts impressive visuals, contrasting futuristic technology with overgrown ruins, effectively creating memorable landscapes. The protagonist, Emma, embodies this fusion, sporting a sleek, monochrome outfit accentuated by a floral braid that grows as she gains strength. It’s a nice touch that reflects her character development.

Emma’s journey across Japan alongside her canine companion, Koo, revolves around hunting down the infamous Beast of Reincarnation while taking on Nushi—powerful enemies spreading The Blight. Unfortunately, the structure of these missions quickly becomes repetitive. Each area feels similar, often consisting of vast green fields or dry deserts, with a few hidden treasures scattered about. With time, the locales blend together, diminishing the excitement of exploration.

As for Emma herself, she lacks depth and personality. Despite her role as a vessel capable of absorbing enemy powers, her interactions are largely emotionless. A scene where she awkwardly asks about love highlights this dullness, with lackluster voice acting and static animations enhancing the monotony. Even the conversations at the mobile base, the Cleanse Walker, with her companion Kagura, fall flat, making it hard to stay invested in their dynamics.

Ironically, Koo, Emma’s dog, shines as a more relatable character without uttering a single word. His charming animations and fierce loyalty bring warmth to the game, yet their bond doesn’t evolve much, leaving players wanting more depth in their relationship.

Now, where Beast of Reincarnation truly shines is in its combat. The battles deliver a satisfying experience, with parry-heavy mechanics that keep players on their toes. Enemies are aggressive, requiring quick reflexes and mastery of Emma and Koo’s abilities. The weighty slashes and the gratifying sound of successful parries enhance the thrill of combat, providing a spectacle of flowers blooming as Emma unleashes powerful combos.

What sets this combat system apart is Koo’s involvement. Players can pause the action to issue commands to Koo, utilizing his abilities to provide tactical advantages during intense skirmishes. This adds an exciting layer of strategy, allowing players to mix and match skills based on their playstyle. However, as exhilarating as the combat can be, it suffers from a lack of polish, as camera issues and inconsistent timing can sometimes lead to frustrating experiences.

Boss fights against the Nushi are visually striking and provide a challenge, but they fall short in their later iterations. Facing the same foes with similar strategies can drain the tension from these encounters, turning what should be climactic battles into predictable routines.

Performance issues also plague the game. Despite running on a powerful PC, players may encounter micro-stutters and frame drops, particularly on systems that can’t fully optimize the gameplay experience. Console performance varies, with PS5 offering a smoother experience compared to the Xbox Series X, which has been reported to face frame rate issues.

In summary, while Beast of Reincarnation presents an ambitious concept with exciting combat mechanics, it suffers from uneven storytelling, lackluster characters, and a need for more polish. The game has its moments of brilliance, especially during combat, but much of the surrounding experience feels underwhelming. For players looking for a captivating RPG, the solid combat might just be enough to keep them engaged, even if the story and character interactions leave something to be desired.
