Behind the Madness: American McGee’s Wild Ride with Alice: Madness Returns

American McGee, the mastermind behind the iconic Alice series, has been quite chatty lately, sharing some intriguing insights about the development of Alice: Madness Returns. In a recent discussion, he highlighted the major clash between his vision for the game and what EA’s marketing team wanted. Spoiler alert: it gets weird, and yes, there are dildo snails involved!

McGee expressed that while he aimed for a compelling narrative, EA’s marketing was pushing for a title drenched in gore and horror, with a decidedly “psychotic” Alice. He wasn’t having any of it. To illustrate his frustration over the marketing team’s requests to “spice things up,” McGee humorously revealed, “I did NOT want to portray Alice as a psycho or cover her in blood.” In a rather bold move, he created a bizarre image of a giant snail adorned with dildos and shot it over to the marketing team, effectively putting an end to their peculiar demands.

What’s even more interesting is how Alice: Madness Returns was financed. Instead of relying on EA, McGee’s studio, Spicy Horse, secured funding through a bank in Los Angeles using a film-like bond finance model. This meant they had complete creative freedom as long as they adhered to the project’s timeline and budget. McGee proudly stated, “We never missed a milestone,” allowing them to brush off EA’s requests without any backlash.

However, things took a turn toward the end of development when McGee noted that the game needed an additional 30 to 60 days for polishing. EA, perhaps out of spite, refused to extend the deadline. Despite this hiccup, McGee delivered the game on time, showcasing the studio’s ability to maintain their creative integrity.

Reflecting on the significance of their journey, McGee pointed out that Alice: Madness Returns broke new ground as it was not only the first AAA game fully developed by a Chinese team but also the first to utilize bond financing in China. In a cheeky tone, he remarked that they were the first team to tell EA to take a hike and get away with it.

As for the future, McGee is already brewing something new—this time, a spiritual successor inspired by his Plushie Dreadfuls toys. He mentioned he’s gathered a small team of trusted collaborators to bring this new venture to life.

So, while the saga of Alice may have faced some turbulence, it certainly leaves us with unforgettable stories and a curiosity for what’s next from American McGee!
