Console Prices Climbing? Take-Two CEO Shares Thoughts on GTA 6 Era & Gaming’s Future!

Hey PakGamers! We’re all buzzing with excitement for GTA 6, which is just around the corner. But let’s be real, the gaming landscape has changed a lot, especially when it comes to the price tags on our beloved consoles. It feels like PlayStation and Xbox machines are getting more expensive with each passing day, and that’s a big topic of conversation in the community.

Recently, Strauss Zelnick, the big boss at Take-Two Interactive (that’s Rockstar Games’ parent company, by the way), weighed in on this very issue. And his take? He’s not exactly thrilled about the ever-increasing cost of hardware. “Look, the rising cost of hardware is not a good thing, and we wouldn’t argue that it is,” he shared during a recent discussion with investors. It’s a sentiment many of us can relate to here in Pakistan, where every price hike hits hard.

So, why are console prices soaring? It’s not just a gaming industry thing. Turns out, a global “AI-fueled memory crisis” is driving up hardware costs across multiple sectors, and yes, that includes our gaming consoles. This year alone, we’ve seen PlayStation, Xbox, and even Nintendo adjusting their prices upwards.

While Zelnick admits these price jumps aren’t ideal, he doesn’t seem to think it will actually hurt Take-Two’s business much, especially with a mega-hit like GTA 6 on the horizon. “I don’t think it will slow us down any because, you know… we believe we’re delivering experiences that people want,” he explained. Basically, when you’ve got games like GTA 6, people are often willing to invest. Still, he believes lower console prices would be a huge plus, as it would put more hardware into the hands of more gamers. So, while it’s not a “positive,” he also doesn’t see it as a major roadblock for his company.

Looking ahead, Take-Two is also keenly observing how the gaming world is evolving. Zelnick believes we’re moving more towards “open ecosystems,” much like what PC gaming offers, rather than the traditional closed console systems. He pointed out that two decades ago, a multiplatform Take-Two game would see only 1-2% of its sales on PC at launch. Fast forward to today, and PC sales can account for a massive 40-50% of total sales for similar titles, and he expects that number to keep growing. It seems PC is becoming an undeniable powerhouse for gaming.

And what if consoles price themselves out of reach entirely? Zelnick has a futuristic outlook for that too. He reckons that if things continue this way, we might all be streaming our games within a couple of years anyway. He even touched upon the move towards digital-only releases, suggesting that physical discs “don’t really make sense” anymore when everyone’s already connected to the internet. If you’re downloading massive updates, why not just download the whole game, right?
