Critical Role and Hololive Unite: Matt Mercer Praises VTuber Talent in Epic TTRPG Crossover, Shattered Legends

In a crossover that few could have ever predicted, the legendary tabletop role-playing maestros from Critical Role are joining forces with the global phenomenon of Hololive VTubers for an all-new series. Titled “Shattered Legends,” this collaboration promises to blend the narrative depth of traditional TTRPGs with the unique charm and performance artistry of virtual idols, creating something truly special for fans worldwide.

It’s a partnership that might seem unconventional at first glance, but as Critical Role’s Dungeon Master extraordinaire, Matt Mercer, discovered, the synergy is undeniable. He shared that working with the Hololive talent gave him a profound respect and understanding for their skills, highlighting that at their core, VTubers are master performers, much like the voice actors he regularly collaborates with.

The Genesis of an Unlikely Alliance

The seeds for Shattered Legends were sown by none other than Nerissa Ravencroft, Hololive’s “Demon of Sound,” a long-time admirer of Critical Role. Ravencroft, who had always dreamt of playing a tabletop RPG but never had the opportunity growing up, pitched the idea to her management. She recounts her disbelief when the news came back that Critical Role was on board.

I was in awe for multiple days. Growing up, I never had friends or knew anybody who ran a TTRPG campaign, so it’s been a heavy desire to play one for a long time. I just so happen to be one of the luckiest girls in the world, as I get to play with not only my fellow [Hololive vtubers], but Critical Role!

Ravencroft became a driving force on the Hololive side, taking the lead in character creation, collaborating with artists to develop unique VTuber models tailored to each character, and even contributing to an original song for the series. This dedication underscores the passion she and the other VTubers brought to the project.

Crafting a Darker Legend in Exandria

The story of Shattered Legends delves into a darker narrative, drawing inspiration from the gritty, epic tales of Berserk and the challenging worlds of Soulsborne games. This was a deliberate choice by the participating VTubers—Nerissa Ravencroft, Mori Calliope, Gigi Murin, and Shiori Novella—who aimed to deliver a story with more weight and intensity than some fans might anticipate.

Matt Mercer and Critical Role’s Marisha Ray, who also joined the table, helped weave this compelling narrative into Critical Role’s established world of Exandria. The campaign is designed as a self-contained, “canon-ish” adventure, meaning it exists within the lore but can be enjoyed without extensive prior knowledge of Exandria’s vast history.

The series promises an immersive experience, showcasing the incredible role-playing abilities of both the Critical Role veterans and the Hololive talents as they explore this new, darker corner of a beloved fantasy setting.

Daggerheart: A Fresh Roll for New Adventurers

For this groundbreaking campaign, the group isn’t playing Dungeons & Dragons. Instead, they’re venturing into the world using Daggerheart, Critical Role’s very own fantasy tabletop RPG system. Daggerheart offers a distinct experience compared to more traditional TTRPGs, especially with its unique dice mechanics.

Instead of the familiar d20, Daggerheart utilizes two 12-sided dice: one representing ‘Hope’ and the other ‘Fear’. This innovative system introduces a dynamic layer of narrative control and player agency:

  • If your Hope roll is higher, you can spend a point of it to trigger a beneficial outcome or effect.
  • If your Fear roll is higher, the Dungeon Master gains a point of Fear, which they can then use at a strategic moment to challenge the players or introduce complications.

Matt Mercer expressed his appreciation for Daggerheart, particularly when introducing new players to the hobby. He noted how its narrative dynamics foster “baked-in tension and release,” encouraging players to collaborate in uniquely creative ways. Nerissa Ravencroft, as a new TTRPG player, initially felt “a bit intimidated” but quickly found herself at ease, thanks to the engaging system and the guidance of Mercer and Ray.

Having Matt as a GM for my first Daggerheart campaign is already crazy enough, but with an incredibly experienced and talented roleplayer and actress like Marisha, we were truly in the best hands possible.

What’s Next for Shattered Legends?

The highly anticipated Shattered Legends series is set to premiere in mid-November. Fans can catch all the action on Nerissa Ravencroft’s YouTube channel, so mark your calendars! The story is tightly structured across six episodes, ensuring a focused and impactful narrative arc.

However, Mercer hinted that this might not be the last we see of these characters or this particular corner of Exandria. He mentioned “much promise of a wider world for these characters” and that “there’s always room to pick up these seeds for future adventures” if the audience shows enough enthusiasm. This collaboration is a testament to the evolving landscape of gaming and content creation, proving that unexpected partnerships can lead to truly innovative and beloved experiences for a global audience.
