Fans of RPGs have a reason to get excited as David Gaider, the mastermind behind the captivating world of Dragon Age, is hard at work on a new heist-themed RPG that promises to be a delightful twist on the genre. After leaving BioWare following a turbulent chapter with Anthem, Gaider has set his sights on a fresh adventure where players will take on the roles of a motley crew of rogues piloting an airship for thrilling heists.

Gaider, well-known for his darker storytelling, is aiming for a lighter tone this time. He stated, “I wanted to create something that could bring a smile. Given the current state of the world, it feels like we could all use a bit of that.” Early reception has been promising, but the journey is fraught with challenges, especially in an industry facing significant hurdles.

The gaming scene is currently experiencing a bit of turmoil. Gaider noted that many studios are tightening their belts, leading to layoffs and a cautious approach to funding new projects. “It’s been almost three years of this weird contraction,” he remarked, highlighting the industry’s reluctance to invest in fresh ideas unless they come with a guarantee of success.

Despite the positive buzz surrounding his new heist RPG, securing enough funds to finish the game remains a struggle. Gaider explained that publishers today are often only interested in backing projects that are already well along in development, which puts a strain on smaller studios like his. “It’s make it or break it for us right now,” he admitted, feeling the pressure of bringing his vision to life.

Having co-founded Summerfall Studios nearly a decade ago, Gaider previously directed the narrative-driven game Stray Gods, which combined classic storytelling with interactive musical elements. Unfortunately, its release coincided with the surprise hit of Baldur’s Gate 3, which overshadowed it in the gaming landscape. “It was tough getting noticed,” Gaider recalled, admitting that timing can make or break a game’s success.

As he navigates the funding landscape, Gaider remains dedicated to creating a game that emphasizes character depth and player choice—elements he believes have faded in modern RPGs. “Characters should have agency; they need to react to player decisions, possibly even turning against you if things go awry,” he emphasized. This philosophy, rooted in the design of earlier games, reflects his desire to recapture the essence of what made RPGs compelling.

As for his previous work on Dragon Age, Gaider expressed mixed feelings about the series’ current direction. He believes the latest installment, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, struggled with capturing the complexity of character relationships that earlier games thrived on. He argued that players should face real consequences for their choices rather than having a smooth, worry-free experience.

Looking ahead, Gaider remains hopeful about the future of his heist RPG. However, he is aware that if funding doesn’t come through, his current studio venture could come to an end. “It’s a philosophical moment for me,” he shared, acknowledging the uncertainty that comes with game development today. Yet, if the stars align and he can complete his project, it might bring back that beloved blend of character-driven storytelling and thrilling gameplay that fans have been craving.

Who knows? If opportunity knocks, Gaider might even find himself back in Thedas, breathing new life into the Dragon Age universe. “I’d love the chance to return to what made it special,” he mused, hinting at the endless possibilities that lie ahead in his creative journey.
