Destiny 2’s Farewell Update Sees Player Surge, Outshining Previous Peaks
Today marks a significant moment for Destiny 2 as it rolls out its last live service update, and players are flocking to the game in droves. With over 164,000 concurrent players on Steam, it’s like the old days of high activity, surpassing even the buzz from the Episode: Echoes launch back in June 2024. For perspective, the previous high was set by the Edge of Fate expansion in July 2025, which only managed to attract 108,000 players before numbers took a nosedive.
Things got pretty grim earlier this year when Destiny 2 struggled to even hit 13,000 concurrent players. The Edge of Fate expansion didn’t quite land well with the community—a sentiment echoed by our resident Destiny enthusiast, Phil Savage, who rated it a disappointing 54%. He noted that the game had become frustrating to play, indicating that it was facing serious issues.
At the time, many players were left wondering if this was the beginning of the end for Destiny 2. Tim Clark, another diehard fan, raised alarms about the expansion’s numerous problems, questioning if the game could bounce back from such a low point.
However, in an unexpected twist, the news of Destiny 2’s impending end has sparked a new wave of energy among fans. Bungie has clearly pulled out all the stops with the final update, titled Monument of Triumph, delivering a hefty patch note list that promises to leave a lasting impression.
Just as it prepares to settle into maintenance mode, Destiny 2 has hit the top of the Steam charts, thanks to a sale that sees the entire game available for just $26 (approx. Rs 7,280)/£22. This surge in interest makes you wonder if Bungie might just pull a fast one and announce another expansion instead!
Fans are definitely vocal about wanting more Destiny action. A petition pushing for the development of Destiny 3 has already racked up over 370,000 signatures, showcasing the community’s desire for a sequel. Who knows what the future holds for this beloved franchise?
