Discovering the Best Budget Upscaler for Your PS2 Gaming Setup
After years of trying to optimize my PS2 experience, I’ve finally stumbled upon a budget-friendly upscaler that tackles the annoying jitters that come with playing our beloved 2000s games on modern screens. While the PS2 looks decent on a classic CRT TV, its interlaced graphics don’t quite translate well to today’s tech, resulting in some bizarre visuals. Interlacing splits video frames into odd and even fields for quicker display, but this can cause noticeable flicker when viewed on modern screens. Some PS2 titles can run in progressive scan, but most were designed for 480i due to the limitations of early 2000s CRT TVs.
Standard deinterlacing techniques often fail to fix the flickering and blurriness that come with interlaced visuals. While the OSSC does a great job reducing lag and improving clarity, its Bob deinterlacing method amplifies the issues associated with interlacing. The GBS-C, however, uses motion-adaptive deinterlacing, which detects changes in pixels, maintaining sharpness while reducing the jitter experienced in static scenes. This is particularly beneficial for games like Silent Hill 2, where background elements can be especially distracting.
One of the standout features of the GBS-C is its motion adaptive upscaling capability. After years of dealing with the flickering from the OSSC, witnessing the GBS-C’s smooth visuals was a game-changer. It offers a variety of settings accessible via a built-in screen or a Wi-Fi menu, though setting up the Wi-Fi connection requires a bit of effort. Once up and running, you can enjoy resolutions up to 1080p and customize your viewing experience extensively.
However, it’s essential to note that while the GBS-C excels in motion adaptive deinterlacing, it doesn’t quite match the sharpness of the OSSC’s line doubling. As I experiment with both devices, I’m curious to see if combining them could yield the ideal setup for my PS2 games. That said, if you’re looking for premium upscaling, options like the RetroTINK-5X Pro or RetroTINK-4K are out there, albeit at a much higher price point.
For those on a tighter budget, the GBS-C is a solid choice, offering a much-improved PS2 gaming experience compared to using your TV’s default settings or cheaper upscalers. Just keep in mind that it works with RGB signals through SCART, component, or VGA, so you’ll need the right cables if you’re using older consoles. Retro gaming just got a whole lot better without breaking the bank!
